just wondering

by: ?????

I will be attending UW not because I wanted to, but because my parents are forcing me to go with the cheapest option since I likely will go on to get a profe$$ional degree. I probably will go Greek because my mom was a GPhi (here) and my dad was a Sigma Chi (not here) and it's a great way to make friends. That said, I'm not a boozer and I wonder if there is ANYTHING to do on this campus that doesn't involve alcohol? My other choices were Vanderbilt, George Washington U. and Duke and they all have a big social life that doesn't depend on drinking. I don't mean to put it down, but drinking is just not something that appeals to me. Please tell me I'm not going to be miserable here for four years.

Why would you EVER consider GW over Wisconsin??? The average ACT is a 25, it has a reputation of prep school kids buying their way in, and DC is the most expensive college town.

Most people I know who go to UW from my high school (considered the most competitive in the state, by the way) are people who wouldn't even consider places like GW, or Vanderbilt, or Duke, or U of Washington or somewhere out of state. They are perfectly content to stay close enough to home to have mommy do their wash and have daddy take their car in for an oil change on weekends. Nevermind the fact that there is a big world out there that is 180 degrees from the culture in this state. I know it's hard to believe, but there are states where college students don't have to be drunk to have a good time. There are states where people actually have friends of another race because they met in high school or lived near each other while growing up. There are states where people like to expand their horizons and try new things, not just replicate the life they grew up with. Most people I know from my graduating class went to Wisconsin because it's cheap and non-threatening and they get to pretend they are uber-cool when really they are bunch of drunk hicks who think football rules and that the height of sophistication is a craft beer.

I AM a student. What did you think? That I wasn't speaking from experience? I am here for grad school and my younger brother didn't get any scholarships to go out of state, so he is at UW and is in the fraternity. Oh, and since you are so BRILLIANT for going to UW, the word "anyways" is substandard English.
