Sororities reaching out before rush?

My roommate has had a few srats sending her messages on social media. I didn’t think that was allowed. She says it is nbd because they are just asking if she is rushing. I thought that wasn’t allowed. No one has reached out to me which is fine because I don’t think I want to rush this semester, but why are they reaching out to some girls?

Messaging students to spark interest is completely allowed all year but they are likely selective on social media based on popularity or such. Discrimination is all around this nation especially in some (sorority) Greek Life recruiting methods.
