importance of letters of recommendation

I'll be a freshman this coming fall and I am wondering how important it is to get one or several letters of recommendation in order to even get a bid? I've heard that rush is very competitive here, so I am a little nervous about even getting a bid.

If you can get one for each house you will be doing yourself a favor. Your effort will be noticed. Why wouldn't you give yourself every advantage?
