friends?
by: OKAYI have been accepted at Madison for next fall and I am fro out of state. I have cousins in Brookfield and they told me the Greek system at UW is really cliquey and that you have to know someone in order to get into a top house. The problem is that I'm from Cali and no one from my high school goes to UW, much less is part of the Greek system. Do I have a chance of getting into a decent house? Greek life is important to me. My sisters and mom were all Greek and I am a double legacy. But I don't want to go to a school where I won't be able to make close friends/sisters just because I don't know anyone.

So, let me preface this with that I am a Wisconsin native: Sconnies (outside of Milwaukee/Madison) are somewhat anti-Greek, imo. None of my high school friends rushed, although most fit the typcical Greek "stereotype". Guessing your cousins are of that group. A lot of OOS (and a lot of CA) girls rush. You will fit right in. Every sorority has OOS girls, and I bet every sorority has girls from CA. Honestly, I don't think of our Greek system as that cliquey. Yeah, some sororities are cliqueier than others, but my friends that go to other schools seem to be in much cliqueier Greek systems than ours. And, btw, I'm in a "desirable" house and I rushed as a sophomore knowing almost no one in the Greek system (mostly frat guys, tbh). I also now hang out regularly with people in several different houses, as well as some GDIs. Just do you, and you'll be fine.

The Greek system is stronger at both of those other schools, but also more competitive. It also probably is more diverse, since Wisconsin has so few minorities and southern schools tend to have a lot. (I'm from the South. Can you tell? I am here only because my dad moved here and I get in state tuition) You can get an excellent education at either one of those other schools, too. I guess my advice would be about what you expect out of college. Greek life here is mainly about partying, but then that's the overall culture of the entire school. If you are going into something science-math-business related, you can't go wrong with Georgia Tech and Atlanta is a great city. And UVa. is just a phenomenal school overall. And let's not talk about the winters.....

My question is, if you were accepted at UVa. and Georgia Tech, why in the world would you consider coming here?

Here's some "HELP!!!!!!" for you: Always choose your school based upon your eventual ACADEMIC EDUCATION. At all campuses there are multiple uncontrollable factors that affect recruitment and the process of choosing new members so basically your chances of "getting into a good house" are equal to everyone else in recruitment unless you decide not to attend, and in that case your chance is zero.

I rushed as a sophomore knowing very few people, and maybe I was just oblivious, but I didn't think that I was treated really any differently than the freshmen. I mean, there were a few houses that cut me during the process (vs me cutting them), but those were for reasons other than me being a sophomore (at least I think that they were). I ended up in a "top" house and am very happy. My best friends in the house are a mix of girls in who are younger than me and were in my pledge class and girls that are the same year as me in college. Honestly, I feel like the age difference doesn't matter at all. Also, I didn't know anyone in my house when I started the rush process (ok, well, I knew of one girl who was roommates with a friend of mine in the dorms). The houses in which I actually had "friends" garnered mix results---one of them I preffed, and the other cut me. Like I said in my other post, I really only knew frat guys my freshman year.

Definitely have your relatives send in their official recs if they have their sorority here. Helps you stand out a little if you don't know anyone and if you are a legacy automatically gets you through the first round at most sororities. Most houses like adding OOS girls to their rosters, so don't worry about what your cousins say. Most (not all) of the info on this website describing houses is old or is pretty inaccurate, so take it with a grain of salt and just go by what you see at rush. If you read anything negative on here it was most likely posted by someone who has a grudge or didn't get a bid. Madison Greek system is fun, but defintely not as exclusive as other huge schools where people might transfer if they don't get into the "right" house. Good luck at rush!

Actually my cousins are part of the Greek system at Madison, so I think they are being honest with me. My two other top choices for college next year are U. of Virginia and Georgia Tech. I am really torn, but my chances at getting into a good house definitely will be a factor in my decision. Maybe the right answer will come to me in a vision, because I am almost paralyzed with indecision right now and I feel as if I don't have enough information to make a good choice. HELP!!!!!!
