First of all what is the difference between these three and when will we find out about them?

Also which houses are predicted to participate ?

Informal/spring: same thing. On our campus, fall is formal recruitment. Spring/informal is still structured, but less so than fall. Less sororities participate, and most that do usually have about 10-15 spots to fill

COB: technically, I'm pretty sure that a house can cob anytime (continuous opening bidding would imply that it is, in fact, continuous). As far as I know, though, houses at Wisconsin only do it in the spring---probably because it makes the most sense logistically. Anyway, basically if a house is "just cob'ing", they only have less than 10 spots to fill (usually less than 5 spots). And, usually they try to fill these spots with people they know, recommendations of influential members/alumni, etc. The COB parties are by invitation only---so random girls that don't know anyone in the house can't just show up. They may be recruiting members during the same time as informal recruitment, but they technically aren't part of it. Confusing, right? I think so, too.

Who usually does informal and who usually does COB

It varies year to year. I'm a sophomore, so I only know about last year and what I've heard about years past. So here's a summary:

Informal: Theta, Tridelta, AXiD, Sometimes APhi, Sometimes PiPhi, Sometimes SDT, Sometimes XO

COB: Sometimes APhi, Sometimes DG (not last year, but apparently the 2 years before that), Sometimes PiPhi, Sometimes SDT, Sometimes XO, Sometimes AXO (I heard they COB'd several years ago, but don't have any hard confirmation)

So, basically, the only houses that haven't participated in Informal/COB in the past 5 years or so are GPhi, Kappa, AEPhi and (possibly) AXO. There's no shame in informal/COB. Different houses do it for different reasons. I've heard that some nationals make you do it if your chapter has spots to fill, even if it's just a few. Also, I've heard some chapters recognize super seniors as active members, so if they graduate in December, then a chapter will have a bunch of spots to fill for spring. Of course, often a chapter may have drops from fall, but I honestly don't think that's a huge deal, either. Greek life isn't for everyone. I rushed in the spring, and highly recommend it. I felt like it was more intimate, and people got to know me better. Fall was just more superficial, I though.

Agreed with everything that Spring16. Also, it's been my experience that some really awesome girls do spring. A lot of them didn't sign up for fall b/c starting college was overwhelming enough. By spring, they really know that they want to rush and probably have friends in the Greek system already. Feel the same way about sophomores who rush in fall. Seriously, they are some of the coolest girls that turn out to be super dedicated members---mostly b/c they really know that they want to be Greek.

Can I send recommendation letters right now in the hope they consider me for a COB or do informal? Or should I wait until they announce if they're gonna do it?
