PMN looking to scope out what to expect.
by: Hello.This.Is.Kitty!
I am currently a freshman and intend on rushing in the spring, or next year in the fall. I have made an effort to go to as many fall rush events as I could to get tickets know the girls to help me figure out what where I'll be the happiest, however I haven't been able to make it to any. So I am looking to hear from the greek community about some of the issues that are most important to me to see if I should follow my heart or if greek life at Montclair isn't for me.
Firstly, I want to join an org that takes greek life SERIOUSLY. My ex went to a different school and he is a TKE and he told me he didn't really like being in a fraternity and did not take it seriously. Joining an greek org is a pretty significant time and finical commitment and I don't want to join one where my sisters will take it as a joke, but at the same time I also don't want to be in one where everyone takes themselves too seriously. There needs to be a balance.
Secondly, what are social events like? One of the main benefits of joining a sorority is the networking opportunity. I'm in between joining a NPC or D9 sorority only because I want that lifelong sisterhood, and NPCs typically only give you a limited membership whereas D9s give you life long but those post grad experiences aren't mutually exclusive. Additionally, from the research I've done a lot of people who were in greek life say it is very hard to stay active as an alumni (this seemed to be the same across all different types of orgs) so something that I want to weigh heavily into my decision is what my social calendar will look like.
These are my two main things that are make or break factors, any other things I don't like I can get past. Please be harsh! Don't sugar coat things, I'm dead set on rushing I just want to know where I stand because I was debating on transferring to Rutgers, because the social scene here is dead. However I do love it here, and I like the sisters and brothers I've met so far so if I the greek community here is able to make up for the campus being dead all the time I want to stay (especially bc Montclair has a really good program for my major even though it isn't a great school, but part of what I am paying for to be on a college campus is a social experience and so far...things aren't looking too hot)

1. I feel like everyone in all of the NPC take it seriously. However, given the size of NPC sororities there's a few people who don't but don't let that take away from your experience. You can get a feel of all the orgs at spring formal recruitment and see a little bit of how serious they are from that.
2. Social events vary from org to org and how close orgs are to each other. Being an NPC, I feel like there is a special greek unity in D9 that haven't seen in NPC unless its formal recruitment season in spring. There is around 40-60 girls in any NPC sorority and D9 tends to have a much more smaller size but are more tight knit. Being 100% you can lifelong bonds in either but they show up differently: in NPC you'll have your friend group or big and you can be for lifers but it's not realistic that you'll have that close relationship with all 40-60 girls in your org, from what I've seen in D9 since it is smaller and strong alumni bond you can be lifelong friends with your whole chapter. Again though it varies from org to org but generally in NPC alumni aren't really present but D9 they are and heavily.
3. Also consider the joining process and financial costs of both. NPC recruitment tends to be very clear cut and D9's process is more private especially depending what org you want.
4. You can always try spring formal recruitment since you meet all of the NPC sororities and drop recruitment if you feel like it isn't right for you or none of them connect with you. I wouldn't recommend going out for fall because not all NPC sororities do recruitment in fall and if they do they give out less bids/accept new girls than in the spring but the fall style is a far more casual and relaxed setting.
Hope this helps :)
