Why does sorority recruitment seem so much more formal than fraternities's rush?

Formal recruitment is a standard process that sororities conduct at almost every school that hosts NPC sororities. One chapter in Michigan's Panhellenic Association, Phi Sigma Rho, is not part of the NPC. They hold informal recruitment in the fall, which is more similar to fraternity rush. Some of the NPC groups also hold informal recruitment at the beginning of second semester, but it's rare and their events are often invite-only.
