No. If you know someone who was in one of those houses, great. If not, I'm not going to tell you that anyone knows on the first couple sets whether you gave a letter of rec or not. Too many girls going through rush. It's kinda more about first impressions. Be yourself, dress nice (not expensive), look your best, and put yourself out there so that when you walk out you made a good impression. These are 3 of the top houses, yes they will be more difficult. Keep an open mind, there's a lot of great girls in all houses. Think to yourself when you leave each house. Could I see myself hanging out with a lot (not all) of them?

Recs aren't required at any house, but the girls absolutely will know if you had one written for you. Each sorority has a different policy on them, but if you can get one for any house, they certainly can't hurt. Don't worry about top houses. Take everyone's advice and be yourself and keep an open mind.

Would it be difficult to rush a top house as a second semester student at Umich? Technically a freshman since a lot of my credits didn't transfer. Would this hold me back at top houses?

Honestly, you shouldn't concentrate on just the "top" houses - if you haven't gone through rush yet, make sure you go in with an open mind and be yourself because you're going to be spending a lot of time with the girls that surround you for the next three years. There are over a dozen sororities at U of M and only concentrating on three will hold you back, and make rush a lot more stressful than it really needs to be. So many girls rush as sophomores- including transfer students, so you should have no problem finding a bid.

Don't worry about whether or not a house is a "top" or "good" house! I worried a lot about that and ended up getting a bid from a bottom house, and I was so disappointed. But I went to bid day anyway and tried out pledging and I really grew to love the sisterhood. Everything WILL work out the way it's supposed to, and you'll find your home!

But if I don't get into a top house then I'll never be able to make any bimbo friends and get to flirt with the douchiest guys on campus!!!

guys it sounds like this might be a guy rushing frats since winter rush for sororities is really not a thing. unless J means that she is considered a second semester freshman this fall. transfers may not get top houses but it's better than just not having rushed as a freshman.

ALL the houses are wonderful and many PNMs get their heart set on certain ones, it's so natural! But keeping an open mind is so very important. I came into rush coming from an extremely small town knowing absolutely NOBODY and I am so, incredibly happy in my house. Bashing any house in any of the "tiers" isn't doing anybody any good. As over-said and cliche as it is, be yourself and the rest will follow. Best of luck!

How much of a time commitment will pledging be? I've heard of girls in Cheer and Band that are greek too. I'm a soph and have a leadership position. Really want to go Greek without neglecting my other org!

You can be as involved as much as you want to be, no one pressures you to go out. Mandatory time commitments include initiation (it's just one day at the end of the semester),1-2x a week one hour sessions about the sorority history, how things work, etc. The sisterhood events and mixers are optional but you should try to go to as many as you can to get to know your chapter and pledge class better! School and leadership positions are a priority for everyone in a sorority. There are people in Greek Life on dance/cheer teams, marching band, robotics teams, student body president/vice president, etc. You won't have to neglect your other org, maybe you can even introduce freshmen members to your organization as well!

Rush will eat your life for a few weeks but I have def heard of athletes and other leaders going Greek. Another option is Phi Rho Alpha since they do not do the full rush and are actually geared toward girls heavily involved in orgs etc.

The last commenter put a positive spin on things, and this might be the whole truth for her chapter. However, I have friends in other sororities who spent a lot of time at their chapter houses when they were pledging. Whether or not mixers were actually mandatory, members made pledges feel like they needed to be there. Beyond that, a few sororities on campus get away with (relatively minor) hazing. Pledging those houses will put larger demands on your time.

Rush also takes up a lot of time. But, of course, that's temporary.

That was the truth for my chapter and girls in other chapters that I know of. There are varsity athletics members, marching band members, engineers, student body reps, etc. in every sorority on campus.

Can you explain the entire rush process? Like what "sets" are and everything. Seriously I'm so new to this and I'm trying to figure out what happens.

There will be a big panhel meeting before rush that will explain everything in more detail and you will also be assigned a Rho Omega who will help you with everything.

For a quick rundown, sorority rush is separated into first sets, second sets, third sets, and prefs. During first sets you see every house and with each set your list gets narrowed down. By pref nights you will have no more than three houses left to visit.

What happens if I don't get a bid?

By: Worried
by: HiAug 13, 2015 2:06:51 PM

As long as you don't suicide a sorority during your last rankings, you will more than likely get a bid, since panhel takes the number of girls rushing and divides it by the number of sororities to let the sororities know the amount of girls they're allowed to offer a bid to. If something happens and you don't, you can always rush some houses during winter and find houses that do continuous open bidding and they may offer you a bid after they get to know you better. Also Michigan panhel is adding two more sororities on campus over the next few years and when they start to rush they'll probably take an entire chapter, so you can keep an eye out for that. If panhel doesn't end up working out for you, there are other off campus social sororities like Phi Rho Alpha. There are seriously so many options and opportunities to go greek, don't be worried (:

Sometimes girls don't get bids and that is okay! With the number of girls rushing it will happen, however never ever take it personally. It all comes down to numbers in the end and you're all fantastic they can just only accept so many. If you don't get a bid, a few chapters hold winter rush. Also there is a chance to rush as a sophomore as well. If sophomore rush does not work out, I believe another sorority is colonizing in 2016 and you can rush that as a junior! There is so many ways to join Greek life and freshmen fall recruitment is not your only shot!
