Jack McGiraffe???

Why is Jack McDowell's neck so long? Is it for eating purposes, to graze on treetops or perhaps other tall flora? I think it may have also gotten him struck by lightning not dissimilar to a tall pole, because his hair looks like its been electrocuted. What gives?
