I'm sure there are more but these have been while I've been at UM.

Sig -> DKE
Phi Delt -> Lambda
Sig Ep -> DU
Chi Psi -> XI
Chi Phi -> ?
SAE -> ?

frat getting kicked off mergers with a typically lower tier frat.

why don't they merge with frats of the same tier

no need for a frat in the same tier to merge with a kicked off frat. it's how lower tier frats move up like DU, Xi, Lambda, etc.

Lower tier places get the benefit of better social from the other places connections. They are also usually smaller so there is room. Same tier places have no incentive to accept a bunch of random guys.
