blackmail

The university is currently trying to blackmail the fraternities that left in order to get them to come back to the university. So far the fraternities are holding their ground, but it shows that fraternities were right to be skeptical about trusting the university.

What exactly is UM doing that is "blackmail"? "Blackmail" implies the fraternities committed a crime which UM is threatening to expose if they don't do something. Is that what you mean to say?

What they’ve done “wrong” in the university’s eyes are leave the university. They’ve lied repeatedly to the fraternities in the past couple days, and when that doesn’t work, they’ve been trying to strongarm the fraternities.
