Why is the pledging process so long? What happens during the pledge period?

I think we had the longest process, from bid day on 9/30 to initiation on 12/2. The content of the new member period depends on the house, but there are usually some things you have to learn before you can be initiated.

generally pledge terms are 6-8 weeks (it may be different/longer this year because recruitment is much shorter) lots of education, some houses do a philanthropy project, bonding activities, big/little, etc

i dont know anything about hazing since im not in those houses. its hard to hear about what a house truly does during hazing unless you are a member or are close with a member. michigan is really tough on hazing allegations brought to the office of greek life's attention so for the most part you need to be on an inner circle to hear. don't necessarily believe this website because it's all pretty gray until you are a member and also things change from year to year.

lastly, dont get too caught up in picking certain houses before you get to campus. i know great girls in almost every house and you may end up clicking with another place better. good luck with recruitment and keep an open mind!!

how many days/hours per week do you have to spend at the sorority when you are pledging?

To be honest, none of those houses "haze or pledge." There are some optional events which basically consist of getting goodies and getting to know each other. Its pretty much all optional though so don't worry about it being a time commitment. No one does ANY of the crazy stuff you read about online, and I have not heard of any sororities hazing or making their new members pledge. You can be as involved as you want to be but I would recommend getting to know as many girls as possible early on because as the year progresses your "best friends" in other sororities and high school friends will start to go their separate ways. Being in a sorority at Michigan isn't about hazing or pledging so just relax and get to know the girls you will spend the next four years with. But seriously though....get involved and do stuff with your sorority...it's really worth it.
