Peek through the windows at a SigEp Residential Learning Community and you won’t see an average fraternity house. You will see studying around a large kitchen table; challenge meetings in the chapter room; committee meetings in the library; ping pong, pool, or working out in the basement; and brothers gathered around a piano singing and playing the guitar or ukulele.

Many people have started to wonder what the state of the SigEp fraternity is. Rumors have been swirling around campus that the organization is dying out, or that its house has been revoked or sold. However, these claims are off base. Most of the talk about SigEp's status stems from their new housing contract with the school for 2018-2019. “We’re moving to be a kind of a dorm-frat hybrid right now,” one source said. The fraternity is still very much an active organization on campus, but they have worked out a new deal with Residential Life. Many members of SigEp live in the house currently, but moving forward any open space will go to non-members for student housing. “SigEp is actually in a growth period right now,” said a fraternity member who asked to be sourced as Gargoyle.
SigEp sees this change as a positive. Many of their issues in the past stem from financial burdens – paying national dues can often be expensive. However, with their new partnership with student housing, some of these past monetary issues will be alleviated. “With the new deal, it’s the same thing, except we have a new way to get paid for filling beds, and we no longer have to pay for empty beds,” Brother Gargoyle explained.
