Students go to college to develop personally and professionally. Some fraternity facilities house brothers in environments that harm rather than help those goals by forcing brothers to go elsewhere to study during parties-- but SigEp's new program to have a substance-free facility provides a very conducive environment for doing what students go to college to do.

Honestly this shouldn't change much about SigEp. The purpose of a SigEp chapter is to find men who share the Fraternity’s principles and to develop them into Balanced Men who will be the next generation of values-based leaders. While a healthy chapter home can play a role in that mission, data from higher education researchers shows that it can also become a distraction from members’ progress through the developmental phases of the Balanced Man Program. When a facility draw attention away from member progress, then the Fraternity will work with its Staff, alumni and volunteers, and the host institution to provide the chapter with a “time-out” from the facility, during which members can re-balance priorities. Host institution administrators are important allies to mentor members while the chapter uses alternative locations supplied, including state-of-art equipment in the Union and in other Common spaces. Once the chapter meets benchmarks on key metrics for fraternal achievement, residence in the chapter’s Residential Learning Community may be resumed.
