rushing a fraternity as a sophomore
by: RushHey everyone! I was hoping to get some advice. I had a bad freshman year, didn’t rush. My gpa wasn’t great and I was off campus for a lot of the year. This year I decided to take a gap year and restart college afresh. I’ve decided that I will be restarting college as if I was a freshman next year and rush a fraternity. I was wondering if I will be looked down upon during rush. I registered with ifc before and have visited a few fraternities so I’m assuming that ppl will know that I am technically supposed to be a junior. Obviously I’m not a freshman but I honestly haven’t made too many friends and my accumulated credits only barely scratch the surface to put me in sophomore stranding. I understand that I may give the impression that I’m awkward or something along those lines, but that’s not true. I am very confident that I would have ended up in a “sociaky relevant” fraternity had I rushed freshman year. So, what do y’all think? Should I even bother rushing? Any advice would be appreciated? Thanks in advance!

First of all, I want to say that you are not alone in regards your experiences and feelings from freshman year. So many people have similar situations and it sucks! I feel bad that happened to you, but I can tell you’re optimistic and making changes.
I LOVE that you are taking a gap year. I hope you do amazing things during it (or at least accomplish what you want to)!

I rushed my sophomore year and I won't lie it is difficult. The key is to know people in the fraternity before hand and the process will be easier. But still don't expect that you'll get into a "top house". Rush all tiers, the most important thing is if you fit well with the brothers. Don't pretend to be a certain way to fit in or gain social status, you want a house where you can be yourself 100%. There are great guys in all tiers. Remember you're forming bonds that should last a lifetime, the party scene is only temporary. Best of luck.
