invited to a private event

It means they like you enough to invite you to an "unofficial" rush event. Basically you made it to the next round. It does not mean you've gotten a bid yet. What usually happens is they hold a few invite-onlys and each time cut a few more rushees; if you make it to the final one you get a bid.
In terms of the events themselves 99 times out of 100 you'll be doing some form of drinking, e.g. a case race or triathlon or beer pong tourney or something. Girls may or may not be there depending on the event, but usually not I'd say.
