merging?

by: Confused

I don't quite understand the mechanics of merging. Once you're initiated into a fraternity, can you become a member of another one? Anybody know how this actually works?

No, you can't (officially). When a frat "merges" into another, it usually means the would-be PC of that fraternity pledges the new one, and all already-initiated brothers become unofficial members of the new one

if you cut all ties with the previous frat you can join the new one

If both nationals OK it, then one frat chapter absorbs the other one's membership (or at least those guys who want to resign and become officially initiates of the new frat).

If both nationals don't agree, then sometimes one frat leases space to the other frat and they pay social dues etc, and the other frat doesn't take in new members but the first frat does. The merger happens over time as the old guys graduate.
