please do due diligence on national aopi
by: watch outPlease do yourself a favor and spend some time researching the national organization of AOPi. Also check out how the National pulled the plug on a thriving chapter of nearly 200 sisters at Cal. Not sure how Michigan Panhel thought it would be a good idea to bring any National to the Michigan campus that would treat its members like the National AOPi treated its sisters at Cal. Did Panhel do any due diligence or was this entire sad story swept under the rug? My suggestion would be to run and run quickly and if you do stay and stick around to watch your wallet as you will be screwed.

Copying and pasting (with a few edits) what I wrote elsewhere:
The decision was made in the 2013-2014 school year, so clearly we didn't know anything about this situation at Cal (but by my understanding, that chapter is lucky that they only got their recognition pulled and didn't get sued for breach of contract). I was able to attend a couple of the extension presentations while that process was occurring. If I'm not mistaken, the original plan was to choose one sorority to come to campus in fall 2014. Ultimately, we liked all three that presented but were able to put them in a priority order, which led to the current staggered introduction. So, no, AOPi didn't have the same compelling "let's-bring-back-our-Beta-chapter" story as Gamma Phi, but we clearly liked them enough to offer them a place in our Panhellenic. I hope that they are treated with the respect they deserve.

The CAL situation has been going on for 11 years and much of the story is publicly available. I don't think Michigan panhel did any substantive due diligence on the national organization AT ALL and at a minimum should have spoken to the ladies at CAL. I am not sure whether Michigan Panhel can now ask AOPi to leave/disband but I would seriously consider discussion of such an action as to have any national be part of Michigan panhel where the national thinks that an appropriate reaction to a contract dispute is to pull a charter does the students of Michigan NO FAVORS. I again tell any and all ladies even remotely thinking about this organization to think hard about making that choice. How would you feel if you pledged and went through initiation and the national organization pulled your charter over a contact dispute or other matter not significant to the ongoing operations of the chapter and its house? You would be out of greek life, out of your house, and unable to pledge another house EVER! RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN and DON'T LOOK BACK!

Here is summary of how the Minnesota case was resolved. Its interesting to note the brutal tactics the national took to essentially "steal" the property from the rightful owners. Eyeopening tactics. Read full case summary for all the awful details.
Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity cannot take over a sorority house belonging to a chapter with nearly century-old roots at University of Minnesota, a federal judge ruled.
Alpha Omicron Pi is a nonprofit women's fraternity established in 1897 by four women at Columbia University in New York. Today, it is headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., and has 190 collegiate chapters in the U.S. and Canada, according to its website.
One of those chapters is located at the University of Minnesota where a tug-of-war for control over a sorority house has played out since 2010. Court documents on this fight abbreviate Alpha Omicron Pi's name as AOII, with the last two letters mimicking the look of the Greek letter pi.
Facing off against AOII is Tau Inc., which built and has owned the sorority house in the 1930s. Tau is the affiliated chapter corporation of a chapter AOII started at the University of Minnesota in 1912. It was originally named Alpha Omicron Pi Society of Minnesota, but changed its name to Tau of Alpha Omicron Pi in 1942 and then became Tau Inc. in October 2012.

Don't know why none of the founding members of AOPi at Michigan haven't commented about the sorry reputation of their national? I am shocked that you ladies are willing to invest your precious time and money with such an unethical national. Check out reddit for much more commentary on the so called business tactics of the national. They have routinely extorted money from chapters via forcing them to use their software and management services. Chapters that refuse are threatened with closure and/or fined heavily. Anyone thinking of joining this organization should seriously consider joining ANY OTHER HOUSE at Michigan. AOPi national is a seriously shady organization. Do your homework and don't believe any of the existing membership as its obvious not one of them or michigan panhel did any due diligence.

Comment has zero to do with the new chapter - just want pnms to know about nationals management style and ethics. I was simply questioning what due diligence Panhel did to vet the national organization. The intent of the posting to was warn potential members what the national organization of AOPi is all about. Every local house has a national behind it. Some nationals are more supportive than others. The fact that the Cal issue is 'complicated' in no way takes apart from the fact that in retaliation the national PULLED THE CHARTER of the LOCAL and left the local sisters heartbroken and without a national organization. Any national that behaves this way in my opinion should be held accountable and any PNM looking at this organization should know that instead of reasoned discourse to resolve any issues with national AOPi to expect threats, bad behavior, lawyers and then having charter pulled. The message from national is always 'its my way or highway'! Beware.
