how do sorority colonies get mixers?

by:

I'm considering joining AOPi, I was wondering how the social side of things would work as a colony. How did it work when Gamma Phi came? Also, is there even really that much interest for AOPi on campus? I'm not sure what I am potentially getting into.

There are way more frats than sororities on this campus so there will always be people to mix with. And if you are interest in greek life I really would pursue AOPi, at least for a couple of their events. From what ive heard from my gamma phi friends it was tough recolonizing but really rewarding.

Right. Also I'm pretty nervous about the whole colonizing process because I clearly don't know which girls will actually be in the sorority. I would want to be sure that they are people I would get along with, you know?

You don't necessarily know all the girls in a sorority by going through regular recruitment. Being the first class in a colony is a big deal and they don't just pick anyone. Go see who's at the other events. AOPi has done this before at other schools and done it successfully. A colony can be your chance to shape the sorority the way you want it to be.

I would think really really really hard about having anything to do with AOPi ANYWHERE. Read some of the details about how they pulled the plug on a thriving chapter at Cal the week before fall recruitment. The entire episode at Cal was beyond shady and seemed to have a lot to do with the national wanting to make a power grab to take control of the very very valuable real estate in Berkeley. The move by National left nearly 200 sisters without a home. I would recommend doing some serious due diligence as based on how they behaved toward their sisters at Cal my suggestion would be TO RUN FOR THE HILLS. Honestly any house is better than AOPi. Not sure why Michigan Panhel felt that this national would be a valuable addition to the community based on their business ethics and standards? This national is questionable at best.

We don't know the ins and outs of that situation. I read some about it and it definitely seems complicated.

You seem intent on tearing down the newest house at UMich and that reflects on what kind of a person you are. Not very panhellenic of you at all.

This sounds like it was probably written by a member or alum of that chapter. Sounds like it was a unique situation that really sucked and sorry it happened. Anyone joining a colony should of course do their research and not base their decisions based on anything they read in this type of forum. If you have concerns, ask the expansion team and see how they address them. If you want to join, then good luck and enjoy!

The decision was made in the 2013-2014 school year. I was able to attend a couple of the extension presentations while that process was occurring. If I'm not mistaken, the original plan was to choose one sorority to come to campus in fall 2014. Ultimately, we liked all three that presented but were able to put them in a priority order, which led to the current staggered introduction. So, no, AOPi didn't have the same compelling "let's-bring-back-our-Beta-chapter" story as Gamma Phi, but we clearly liked them enough to offer them a place in our Panhellenic. I hope that they are treated with the respect they deserve.

Read the separate thread on AOPi national business ethics and also check out reddit threads. The AOPi national has business ethical standards that might not agree with how you think business should be conducted. My suggestion is to vote with your feet and stay away and take your time and money to another worthy chapter here at Michigan (and there are quite a few great houses to choose from!).

I seriously agree with watch out based on what my sister said happened at her school. The national tried to take the local AOPi house too and without the support and legal guidance of the local alums the local chapter would have been totally screwed. I cannot believe that Michigan couldn't do a better job scrutinizing the colony requests. Its well known in the National Panhel that AOPi National is run by a bunch of southern hillbilly thieves! Can you say Southern Dixie Mafia and Travelers? Awful choice by Michigan.

Total real estate plot - Read an article in the Cal newspaper

Sounds like an interesting organization...

OP, I think you should do it. Being a founder would be such an honor and an experience you won't be able to get again. I would 100% do it.

AOPi nationals seems committed to making the chapter a success from what I have seen, that other person is just fear mongering and being a terrible person.

I am absolutely horrified to see a comment like this. As someone who has had the pleasure of interacting with her on multiple occasions, I would have been happy to have her in my sorority and I'm sure a lot of people in this community would say the same. I can only hope that AOPi will not be as closed-minded as some people on this site clearly are and will extend her a bid.

Yet your own sorority dropped her too. So go point the finger at your sisters. Obviously all the rest of us, including AOPi felt the same way. Guys don't want to socialize with dudes dressed up as girls. Eww.

Guy here and I have to agree. We wouldn't be mixing with a trans sorority. Sorry but it's the truth and I think you all know it. That's why everyone dropped him.

I happen to know that my house was the one that did not drop her, thank you very much.

the trans thing was secondary. she's just got an annoying personality.

i do find it interesting that she rejected the only sorority who wanted her. i guess she only wanted to be in a sorority if it wasn't at the bottom. someone did want her but that doesn't fit in with her narrative of omg they rejected me cuz I'm trans.

also she was going to be gone for the first month aopi is here. being in a colony is a lot of work and all the members need to be there for it and for them to all bond together to become a real sorority. pretty sure that was a big reason why they'd reject her, and the annoying part of course
