rethink sorority recruitment
by: Rethink
I think after this year, sororities seriously need to rethink recruitment. For some reason, the system really, really did not work this year and I'm seeing tons of girls going to pref at houses they don't want, wouldn't fit in at, have cut every round, etc. I'm seeing girls going to houses where they aren't at all "finding their home", they're being forced to go there because the sorority keeps inviting them.
There's a lot of flaws in the system right now. Too many girls have fallen through the cracks and too many have ended up where they didn't want to be and where they didn't fit in.

what needs to be rethought here is what all of these girls mean by "houses they wouldn't fit in" but for the most part all sororities have room for a variety of people and recruitment only gives you a small glimpse of the varying personalities and experiences of each sorority...these girls need to be more open minded

I think a lot of girls will be dropping before initiation/after bid day. I think the post about the numbers was really important to think about, but something seems to be extremely, extremely off this year.
I agree that every sorority has diversity (yes, even the ones that are very "typey" - I won't name names, but some are a little less diverse than others), but for the most part, a house has a "feel". We can ALL agree on that. Not necessarily a stereotype (though people do stereotype them), but each house and sorority have a different vibe and thing going on. If a girl doesn't like that vibe or she feels she doesn't fit in, why is she being asked to be more "open-minded" ????
Just because you think some people are nice and friendly DOESN'T mean you want to hang out with them, be their best friends, can see yourself doing things with them. I don't think that girls should be asked or encouraged or pressured to join a sorority they don't see themselves being a PART of.
#7by: not gonna change
unfortunately, the recruitment system will most likely never change, in that it's pretty much a national system that every school uses. the only way it would change would be if sororities went off-campus and created their own rush process, like some have at Penn

This times 1000! Those other houses rejected them. They just can't deal with the fact that they really don't belong where they think they do.
