What's the deal with Phi Mu? The girls I've met are sweet and cute and fun, but then I usually only hear people bash them. What's the real take on these ladies?

I'm not in Phi Mu, but I have so many beautiful, wonderful friends who are. There are pretty girls in every sorority. There are not-pretty girls in every sorority. There are smart girls in every sorority, and there are not so smart girls in every sorority. There are nice girls and catty girls in every single house. People bash Phi Mu because they recolonized relatively recently making them an "easy target". Anyone who feels the need to bash another house is just trying to compensate for their own lack of confidence. Try to go into recruitment with an open mind, and pick the house whose personality meshes well with your own. Everything happens for a reason, and if you have the right mindset, you won't be unhappy on bid day.

You're right about Phi Mu having a lot of great girls. They were the newest house on campus for a few years until ADPi colonized in the fall, so they had a rep for picking up the other sororities' leftovers, and there are a fair amount of sisters who are socially awkward or not conventionally attractive. However, their last few pledge classes have gotten better and better (right now they're way better than SDT, in my opinion) and they're on track to have another strong pledge class this year, made up of beautiful, intelligent women. They have really strong sisterhood and awesome events, they're almost all sweet and very fun to be around. Don't underestimate Phi Mu during rush, it's a great sorority!

Phi mu gets flack because currently they have the lowest percent of "attractive" members. That's awful that things are decided that way because I think in terms of sisterhood Phi Mu fantastic and that's really what Greek life is all about. I do understand the ranking partially, however, because a lot of the Phi Mus I've talked to are not as smart/funny/interesting/distinctive as girls I've met in Theta, SDT, or Chi O. They sometimes come off as bland. That's not to say that I don't know fantastic funny beautiful girls in Phi Mu because I do. But I'd say they are the exception rather than the rule. I personally was not wowed by Phi Mu during rush, but if you are then I'd say by all means go for it! I know a girl who went Phi Mu over a higher ranked house and she seems to love it. It's all about the fit, don't let rankings or bashing get in your way.

It doesn't come from the top where people don't care, but people used to have fun bashing them because they were an easy target back when they were new and now SDT feels the need to bash them because they realized Phi Mu passed them a while ago. The strongest voices against Phi Mu are the ones who see them as competition - lookin at you SDT/Theta (has ADPi learned to bash yet?) - but they are sweet and attractive and fun girls. They're just not at the top.
