really awkward top and lower invites back

by: um

I feel like so many people got an invite back to one relatively top house and one very low house. Are a lot of people suicide bidding?

If you suicide, you will not get a bid.

You will only get a bid by suicide if you’re on the top of that house’s list. Don’t test your luck.

But why would it make a difference for your chances of getting in your top choice if you suicided the sorority you want or if you put it as your first preference with a second choice underneath?
If you put a second choice and you don’t really want that one, don’t you have to take the bid if it is offered to you and you don’t match with your first choice? I’m confused.

they purposefully make the system in a way so girls don’t do that by making it extremely difficult to get your top choice. Tbh I can’t 100% remember how exactly it works, but has to do with rewarding the girls who “trust the system” by making it more likely to get their top choice if they list both options.

So if you suicided, does that mean that even if you are near the top of your first choice house, that you might not get it simply because you suicided? That somehow the "suicide" would push you down in their list?

I thought it was matching.

What you put on your card does not affect your placement on a house's bid list. If you are high enough on your top choice's bid list to match with them before they reach quota then you get a bid. If they reach quota before getting to you on their bid list, then the algorithm tries to match you with your second choice house the same way. If you match with 2nd choice before they reach quota then you get a bid from them. In the event you don't match to either house, you will still get a bid as a quota addition to either (certain factors go into where you are placed.) But, if you only rank one of your houses (suicide) and don't match, then you are done; you cannot be a quota addition and will go without a bid at all.

But if you put a second choice it’s like saying you’d be okay with that choice too when maybe you know your not. If you get a bid it says you are obligated for a year. A PNM’s fear is that maybe the tulane recruitment director will put someone else in your first choice spot.and you in your second choice just to make sure everyone gets a bid from somewhere. It’s hard to trust the process when everyone around you is getting cut and dropping out.

no I totally get it, but I’m just telling you what Panhel has told us on the other side

The reason is quota additions: if you only rank one of your houses (suicide) and don't get that bid then you are out of luck and are not eligible to be a quota addition. If you rank both houses and don't match with either, you will be a quota addition and still be assured of a bid, with a chance to be placed at your top house.
