rush
by: FreshGetting nervous about recruitment. Can sorority members comment on what their specific chapters look for in members. Does GPA matter? Does a rec help? Does it hurt living in an RLC? Which ones pick only friend groups? I heard Tulane Rush is awful and so many girls drop. Is this true?

I don't know where you heard Tulane rush is awful. I'd say we have one of the least competitive rushes in the south because nearly everyone, as long as you don't do something extremely stupid, gets a bid to somewhere.
GPA will usually matter with all of them but the sororities who probably consider it the most are Phi Mu, Theta, and Chi O.
The top tier ones tend to accept friends and people they previously knew.
In general, the upper tier ones tend to focus more on appearances, whereas the "lower" tier ones tend to focus more on the well rounded ness of a girl.

many girls drop because they didn't get top houses! if you keep an open mind you'll be totally fine. some of the best girls i've met on this campus are in "lower tier" sororities. most chapters look for a certain X factor that matches a girl to their current members. GPA doesn't matter as long as you're above the requirement - some houses provide an extra boost for high GPAs. RLCs definitely don't matter. recs help but only vaguely.

Girls drop all over the country because of not getting what they want. Everyone goes into rush thinking they will get a bid to a better house. It's just the way it is. And when they get dropped part way through rush they freak out and drop out. People hate to think of themselves as "lower" tier. But if you can let go of all that, it really is true that a girl would have to do something completely crazy not to get a bid SOMEWHERE. Like it or not, tiers exist. They shouldn't because it's true that there are awesome girls everywhere. Some of the coolest girls I've ever known were from "lower" tiers. But the tiers do exist. It's the whole premise of sororities. If everyone were the same, they would cease existing. Everyone knows which ones are considered top and those are the most selective. The girls who have the best chances of getting in those are super hot and smart and come from schools where current members also went to school. There's a connection.
