rushing for freshman starting in spring
by: ...How much harder is it to rush as a Freshman starting in the spring for strats? Like do most of them already know what girls they want based on how first semester went, will houses be confused who you are because they never saw you first semester, and do you even have a chance of being given a bid to a top or mid house? I know Tulane has a pretty accepting greek system but starting spring semester is a new thing for Tulane and I was just curious as to how greek life would react to it.

it's not a new thing, its been done for years here. if you know girls in the sorority, the sorority most likely knows about you already and has information about you. if you don't know any girls, then just put your best foot forward during rush. knowing people gives you an edge obviously, but you can still land in pi phi chi o kappa etc if you don't know anyone there.

The good thing about Tulane's sorority life is that it's not as competitive as a lot of other southern schools that require letters of recommendation and a sacrifice of your limb to land a sorority of your choice. I knew practically no one in a sorority around here when I went into rush my freshman year and still ended up somewhere I liked. Like the last comment said; just put your best foot forward and keep an open mind and you'll do great!

You can absolutely get a bid even if you don't know anyone. I'm in a "top" tier sorority and we gave out bids last year to girls we didn't know and some who hadn't even been at Tulane first semester. No house cuts girls because they don't know them/about them from first semester. Put your best food forward and make a good impression on open house day. Be friendly to everyone you meet, don't talk badly about anyone, etc. also BE YOURSELF

I'm quite social and enjoy going out and meeting new people, so going off of what everyone has said I'm assuming it's not terribly difficult to make friends with fall start tulane students as a spring start? I'm sorry
for all the questions I'm just kind of nervous and worried about feeling like an outsider and being discluded from my class and other tulane students as a result of missing first semester and all the freshman bonding that goes with it.

Put your best foot forward, keep an open mind, and have the best conversations you can during recruitment. These girls talk to a LOT of people throughout the day, so if you have anything cool or interesting you can share about yourself, definitely offer it up. You're going to have some great conversations and you're going to have some pretty lousy ones, and that's okay.
As long as you go into rush with a positive attitude and an open mind, and keep that perspective throughout the process, you'll be fine. I think where a lot of girls get disappointed or discouraged is when they aren't asked back to a house they like, or when they reach the end and get a bid from a house that wasn't their top choice. All of the sororities at Tulane are amazing, and there are so many different girls and personalities in each one that you're bound to make friends. If you get into your top choice, fantastic, but if you don't, it's really not the end of the world.

Just talk about what you're comfortable with! Trust me, no one is going to think you're an outsider, and chances are, when you finish recruitment and become part of a sorority, you'll end up becoming friends with a lot of girls from your pledge class. My freshman roommate is the only person on my entire floor I still talk with, whereas I'm currently living off-campus with 3 of my sisters.
Besides, a lot of the freshman still haven't experienced a good chunk of the stuff that they want to yet (i.e.: Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Crawfest), so in terms of feeling like an outsider, there's still a ton of stuff that a lot of freshman look forward to that you guys haven't experienced yet.
Don't be nervous! Rush is a great experience and you'll come out of it with a lot of great memories. Just stick with it, be yourself, and have fun!
