what does it take to get a bid from a top house?

by:

I'm going to Tulane next year and I'm definitely rushing bc my mom and sister went greek and they have nothing but good things to say about it! My mom is a kappa and my sister is a DG and I was wondering what top houses are looking for in girls when considering giving them a bid. Like is there a GPA cutoff does your insta have to be flawless lol.... and do you have to become one of the popular freshmen first semester bc of the whole second semester rush thing, all that kind of stuff.

I guess our school is bringing in dumber and Moreno self-conscious people each year.. chill. Rush where you like, not what's top house. You sound like a perfect fit for kappa with this post though

Yes I would like to be in a top house as long as I like it and they like me, how does that make me dumb? I don't understand why you seem so offended by my post, if you didn't like it then you didn't have to reply.

Setting all of that aside, the fact that you're saying right now, as an incoming freshman who's probably never met a Tulane sorority girl, that you want to be in a "top house" is not good. It sounds like you're only rushing for the social status and not because you want to meet and make friends that will last a lifetime. One of two things usually happen to the girls that go into recruitment with this mentality:
1) They'll get anywhere from immediately dropped to relatively far into the process before the top houses realize you'd be a better fit elsewhere. It's nothing mean or personal - if we don't think you'd be happy in our chapter, we drop you. From there you can either decide to keep an open mind and continue with the rest of recruitment, and eventually wind up in a great house that you would've been much happier in anyway, or you can resolve to rush again Sophomore year and try for a top tier house a second time (spoiler alert: if you didn't get a bid your freshman year, you definitely won't get a bid as a sophomore)
2) They'll somehow make it through the process, get a bid to a top house, and it won't be as glamorous on the other side as they imagined. The girls that rush strictly for status almost inevitable wind up dropping at some point because they're disappointed with what life in the sorority is actually like.

It's okay to want to maximize your options, and maybe you'd fit in great in one of the top houses. Just go in with an open mind and be aware that the top houses are definitely going to be extremely competitive. And if you wind up getting a bid and if the house is middle or bottom tier, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot and going through pledging at the very least - you'll more than likely be pleasantly surprised.
