bids
by: FreshmanI've heard that SigEp is nice to a lot of freshmen just so they will rush and then don't end up giving a lot of bids. Is this true? Or is this something that all frats do?

I'm not in SigEp so I cannot speak to the exact internal workings of their fraternity but the short answer is yes. SigEp is notorious for getting close to a lot of guys (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and then giving them the impression that they'll receive a bid (this is bad).
I have a number of friends who are brothers in SigEp and they are each assigned to a few guys in an attempt to recruit them and their friends into rushing. SigEp likes to have as many people at their rush events as possible and then cut down the number dramatically when it comes time for closed rush and bid distribution.
To be fair to SigEp, other fraternities do this as well but SigEp is the most noteworthy.

The above post is sadly very accurate. SigEp is notorious for pulling this type of garbage. However, they do end up taking pledge classes each semester of around 10 guys.
Many of the guys are very nice but it is an unwritten rule to get a ton of guys to their rush events so they can advertise that they're the most popular and exclusive fraternity on campus. My freshman year roommate rushed and at a single open rush event, they had around 80 guys. In the end, around 20 were invited to closed and I believe their pledge class that semester was 12.
The bottom line is that you should meet guys in every fraternity. You can't go into rush expecting to know the fraternities. You need to meet the brothers.
