how much does greek life cost?
by: eaglehow much does it cost to join a sorority? I've heard it's pretty expensive so I'm hesitant to go through recruitment

Dues depend on your organization, but dues for chapters at American are by NO MEANS what dues would be at a state school where dues can be anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000. Dues here are anywhere from $550 to $800. Most all chapters have payment plans and WANT to work with you if paying is a problem. During recruitment, seriously ask about it! All sisters are (or should be) "trained" to answer those questions. SO many girls are on payment plans chapter wide. If you have questions, DO NOT hesitate to ask about it during recruitment with a sister you feel comfortable with. It is such a common question, but don't let it stop you from going through!!

First semester dues will always be the most expensive (i think mine were around $625?) But the semesters following will vary by chapter! Mine are around $350 & I'm paying myself-lots of orgs will have a payment plan, and sisters are also an amazing resource to find jobs and connections if money is an issue!

Dues are different for each organization, but a portion of your dues will ALWAYS go back to the organization's national headquarters (this pays national consultants, pays for the headquarter building, etc.). Then the rest of your dues stay within your chapter. Dues can pay for social events, philanthropy events, teeshirts, chapter pins, chapter new member books, food, supplies for your chapter, etc. You definitely see where your money is going and every treasurer of any organization should be able to show you transparency on where you money IS going!
