the "everything" rundown of fraternity recruitment

by: Recruitment

Recruitment or "rush" lasts around a week. It begins with IFC's "Meet the Greeks" event. While you are not required to visit every chapter, it is suggested that you visit as many as possible to get to know as many brothers as possible. You are required to attend "Meet the Greeks" in order to rush. After the event ends, rush week officially begins. Every fraternity schedules their own events but each typically has two to three open events. Like Meet the Greeks, I'd suggest going to as many as possible simply to keep your options open. As the week progresses, brothers will give out invitations to their closed rush event. Keep in mind that some fraternities might have a single open rush event and then give out invites to closed that night or the next day. As a result, you might still be rushing one fraternity when invites to another's closed event have already gone out. This is why I suggest that everyone rushes every fraternity. If you receive an invite to a closed rush event, it is typically held on the Friday, Saturday, or Sunday or rush week. It is more formal and you will learn more about the fraternity and its values. After this event, the brothers will vote as to whether or not to give you a bid. There is no limit to the number of bids you can receive but in the end you can only sign one.

Note that the threshold to receive a bid is typically much higher than to get an invite to closed. For example, you might only need the support of the recruitment committee (or 50% of the chapter) to get an invite to closed but 75% of the chapter to get a bid.

Every fraternity handles legacies differently but you should make sure the brothers know that you are one. You're not guaranteed a bid from that fraternity but it is almost assured.
