a message to the freshman

by:

As we approach spring recruitment, I wanted to provide my thoughts on the fraternities and sororities at AU. For transparency’s sake, I will admit that I am a brother of Sigma Alpha Mu. I have been pretty involved in Greek life (as well as other activities on campus) and think I have something to add by posting my thoughts on this forum. When I first got to AU, I read Greek Rank and ultimately I came to believe that it provided a poor reflection of the Greek community at AU.

Let me be clear: every Greek organization has positives and negatives and there is no such thing as the tier system. I have friends in every fraternity and every sorority. The notion of tiers exists for freshman who are so intent on joining Greek life. Few actual members actually think about it. My advice is to get to know as many brothers are humanly possible and give every fraternity a chance. I know sorority recruitment requires you to do this and I wish fraternity recruitment did the same. Don’t rush based on names or “tiers”; rush everywhere.

-Delt: Like Alpha Sig, I am not really sure what went wrong with Delt. They throw semi decent parties but the entire concept of the type of guy they’re looking for has changed. They are not nearly as involved as they used to be and I think that the Greek community suffers as a result.

-Lambda: I feel bad for these guys. They’re smart, nice, and really involved. They just never took off.

-Phi Sigma Kappa: Like Delta Chi, I am not sure why Phi Sig Kapp is viewed so favorably. They also have a tremendous brotherhood but they also recruit like few of the other fraternities. If you haven’t been approached by a brother by now about rushing, I’d suggest not rushing them at all. They know what they want and don’t even consider the other guys.

-Pike: I get why people hate Pike. They are easily the most stereotypical frat at AU. What people forget his how incredibly involved they are. They are at every philanthropy and are really working hard to improve the image of Greek life at AU. They also throw pretty good parties. You do need to be a certain type of guy to be a Pike but that’s ok. They offer a lot.

-SigEp: When I arrived at AU, these guys were the gold standard: involved, smart, and social. Now they aren’t nearly as involved and people just seem to laugh at them. They’ll get a pledge class of 15 guys but ultimately a brotherhood won’t form. They need to re-visit the SigEp that existed a few years ago because that was a fraternity, this is just a club where everyone seems to hate one another.

-ZBT: These guys are under appreciated. Admittedly one of their brother’s is one of my closest friends but I really have a lot of respect for them. They focus heavily on involved and academics. I believe they are the only fraternity that actually does not haze and I really respect that. It says a ton about their character. I’ve been to two of their parties and they make sure that everyone is safe. As a result the “fun” aspect might not be as great as some of the other frats but it is very telling to see what lengths they’ll go to in order to make sure that everyone is safe. They’re still new so if you’re interested in leaving a legacy and building something, you should consider ZBT.

-Zeta Psi: Zete has grown tremendously. They used to be known solely for smoking (that honor now belongs to Pi Kapp) but they’ve stepped it up over the last few cycles. It will still take some time to shed their previous image but no one can deny that they’re trying.

-Alpha Chi Omega: The infighting that exists in this sorority is ridiculous.

-AXiD: They need to stop trying so hard. They have a ton of girls and are really involved but they talk more smack than any other sorority.

-AEPhi: AEPhi has had a rough few years. They’re still good ladies but they need to massively overhaul their image if they want to return to the old AEPhi that people at least respected.

-Chi Omega: This is a sisterhood. No question.

-DG: Like Chi O, DG has a strong sisterhood but they have this awful sense of underserved superiority about themselves. They love one another but they can be very catty towards other fraternities. They don’t give sororities the time of day.

-Phi Mu: Some of the nicest girls on campus. Always fun and involved.

-Phi Sig Sig: Really sweet ladies but something about the organization rubs me the wrong way and I cannot put my finger on it.

-Sig Delt: Like Phi Mu, these girls are so sweet and have added a ton to the Greek community. I know people like to crap on them but they truly understand sisterhood.

I am unaffiliated and this is the most dead on accurate depiction of the sororities on campus... and you're a dude. Right on man.
