getting dropped

by: nervy pnm

I’m going through recruitment in a few weeks and at the info sesh they mentioned that not everyone is guaranteed a bid this year. What are the odds of not getting a bid this year?

it’s true that no chapter ever “has” to offer anyone a bid. these are private organizations and they will only ever ever offer you a bid if they like you and can see you thriving in the org. however, it’s VERY rare to get dropped from the process entirely. you’re going to be meeting so many different people and personalities that the odds of not clicking with a single one are low. unless you’re being outright rude to a person or talking badly about a chapter (we all talk to each other), I can’t imagine being dropped entirely. I wouldn’t worry about it.

i would say the only danger here is if you’ve been dirty rushed (wooed before recruitment or previously promised a bid). 9/10 times the house will falsely promise u a bid and then the other houses find out through the grapevine and drop u. play by the rules and it won’t happen. only warning bc this happened to many girls last year.

one more thing: don’t try to game the system in any way. we’ve seen every attempt out there by women who want a specific sorority to get in to that sorority and only that one. It doesn’t work that way. In addition to meeting them all in person, there’s an algorithm behind these meetings. There’s nothing you can do to “guarantee” your place anywhere, so just let the idea that it’s possible to be guaranteed a bid anywhere go. It’s not. Instead, focus on having good conversations and use recruitment as an opportunity to make new friends in EVERY chapter because, no matter where you end up, having friends in all chapters will only help you. Help you in recruitment, but also help you at AU and in life. You want people to remember you as polite, interesting, and friendly. To everyone.

As long as you’re kind and respectful during all rounds of recruitment this probably won’t happen to you. Typically it’s done when people don’t play by the rules, or “suicide bid” after preference round. Go in with an open mind and embrace those who embrace you.
