pretty sure they're done. as in not recruiting. they are not currently a recognized sorority at AU making them the equivalent of EI

They're still in good standing with their national hq according to the FSL site so they're still recognized. Too soon for a judgement.

doesn't really matter if their in good standing with they national headquarters... they aren not in good standing here and not recognized as an AU organization. Also, after everything they've done that is honestly horrible if they are still in good standing with their national headquarters. that would mean the Chi O across the country is in support of hazing

By: @No you're wrong

again, these things take time so i'm sure the university is fact gathering and it will get back to the HQ and let them make the decision. I wouldn't be surprised if they got shut down, it just needs time to work its way thru the bureaucracy of nationals. it does matter if they're in good standing w/ nationals bc if nationals think they can reform, they'll take the aephi route and review members and then be super closely watched.

not defending chi o bc obviously i think they should be kicked off. but we won't know for sure if that's happening until they go thru nationals.

I would ditto the above- I am sure that the Office of Campus Life (OCL) will carry out a full investigation of both ChiO and Beta, and then release sanctions. I don't know anything about the incident(s), but if they only involve a few members and are not particularly egregious, then I am sure the Office will respond accordingly. If the violations were systematic and across a large number of members, then probably shutdown is likely. In the last two years, at least 3 frats/sors at AU have been under C&D and then had those sanctions listed. My guess is same for these unless incident(s) major. OCL has competent leadership and recognizes that Greek Life is one of the bright spots at AU.

Well there’s a new administration so it’s impossible to predict what they are going to do. EI was expelled by the OCL with Berwells approval

Mike- EI had a completely egregious and extremely criminal record. Beta and ChiO are not in the same league-- and honestly not even in the same playbook. Burwell was only able to take these actions because the university changed some policies in the spring, and she only took office in the late summer. Plus that EI effort required considerable coordination with the DC police, FBI, and probably some other jurisdictions. Beta and ChiO both have terrific national offices and undoubtedly will respond to the C&D by cracking down on any deviant behavior and eliminating it, so the university doesn't need to take the bigger step of shutting them down. For the most part, the staff in OCL and OF&SL are the same people who were there a year or two ago. I am cautiously optimistic that Beta and ChiO will not be kicked off campus; rather they got a really big warning and will be a much better version of themselves, and then the other Greek organizations get the same message to be on their best behavior.

is chi o recruiting for the spring?? or is it just fall recruitment they're kicked off. I'm wondering bc I want to rush and I want to see all of the orgs. idk what they did or anything

they won't be recruiting unless they successfully get off c&d AND don't get suspended/punished in a way that impacts recruitment, which seems very unlikely at this point (remember aephi??). they might not even be an official organization on campus soon!
trust me, they're a sinking ship and you don't want to associate with them.

so does this mean each chapter is going to have to take even more girls? pledge classes above 35 are just too big

By: uh
by: ok

i mean everyone did just fine before sigma kappa was on campus, also when aephi couldnt recruit so its really not a big deal

At this stage, we can almost safely assume that ChiO is not going to recruit. The University/Campus Life need to send a strong anti-hazing message, and the alleged activities seem to justify that- even if only committed by a handful of sisters.
As for sorority pledge class sizes, 35 may seem large to you- but it is small in comparison to other campuses. For example at Alabama last year, 2338 women accepted bids to 16 sororities- about 146 in each pledge class. And a year earlier there were even more women.
At AU, as at most universities, pledge class sizes are determined based on the number of women who sign up for rush and stay through rush.
