why do fraternities exist at umd?

Why do fraternities exist at UMD? What good do they provide?
I'll start the list:
1. Derby Days Sponsored by Sigma Chi and benefits the Children' miracle Network Hospitals
2. Terpthon sponsored by UMD student organizations and benefits Children's National Health System in Washington D.C.

Fraternity men have on average a higher GPA then regular students. WHY DO REGULAR STUDENTS EXIST AT UMD?
