Is it worth it to join a mid or lower tier sorority?

by:

I am rushing this spring and am worried that I won’t get into a top sorority. If I get a bid from a lower or mid tier house will it still be worth it to join or should I try to cob the houses I want?

I may be a bit biased, since I am in a "lower" house, but it is totally worth it in my opinion. During recruitment, I was set on joining a "top house", but obviously that didn't happen, but now I couldn't be happier. Through my sorority, I've met some of the most genuine, kind, and supportive girls who I am so glad to call my sisters, and I know in my chapter, we are constantly working to be the best chapter we can be. Whether our best is as a "top house" here at UMD or not, what matters is the content of a PNM's character, not the way they look, along within our chapter, being inclusive, kind, having fun, and following the integrity of our chapter's bylaws. This is in addition to striving to (and following through) in participating more in the Greek community as a whole, along with being the best students we can be.

However, if you know for sure you don't like a house, drop it, as you don't want to be miserable wherever you end up. My best advice for recruitment is to trust the process, keep an open mind, but also go with your gut.

Good luck with recruitment!

No one judges u by what house u r in, fr. Go with the house where u feel a connection, regardless of "tier". GL!

It’s important not to go into recruitment thinking about tiers and rankings. Those are artificially created and in practice, your sorority’s “tier” really doesn’t change anything about your experience. I’m in a “lower tier” sorority and I’m so happy with my decision to not focus on that. I truly think if I went into recruitment worrying about tiers and rankings I wouldn’t be as happy with where I ended up. You should be focused on finding somewhere you fit in well and finding your true friends instead of on rankings. Good luck during recruitment!
