how competitive is sorority rush?

Yeah! Finally!!! Maryland is pretty chill!!! Hot people go to school here BUT it's not focused on whose hot. Maryland is about school - 1 and having a good time. If your focused on a top tier or particular house, you'll see when you go through rush how it goes. I agree with the posts, for some girls all the top tiers want them. The top tiers attract a group of girls and I think the kd, theta and tri delts all look similar... I see pretty brunettes in tri delt so not all blonde. Those 3 houses have a large amount of very good looking girls. If your pretty with a personality you have a good shot! It's also personality and the girl who posted this??? Hundreds of girls go through rush and you click with the people your comfortable with. I dont think a tri delt or kd looks down on someone in a different house. We all go to maryland and are in the greek system together. In classes together. Maybe this girl just visited, but maryland is chill!!!

I agree to a degree with the above post. I think maryland is pretty chill. I'm in a top sorority and a few girls in my house dont quite fit in, they chose wrong. Maybe reached. No one is mean to them, but some girls dont fit in and dont feel as comfortable. Why the posts question...is it hard to get a bid to a top tier house? I think you should rush, be yourself, look around at the girls in each house and access if you really fit into a house versus is it a top tier and your choosing on status/tier versus fit. The girls who dont fit in .... are different? It's a social club so it should be fun versus awkward for you. I think a girl who wrote the post seems more into status than fit. Agree, when I went through rush I liked and fit in at all 4 "considered" top tier houses. I don't think 1 sorority is harder than the other to get a bid, you should click with 3 or 4 out of 4. Natural. Versus strategy. My friend on my dorm floor liked other houses and is very happy in her house. We are good friends still. I like her friends, she likes my friend. We hang out. I wouldnt pick her sorority as my pick and she wouldnt pick mine...we chose on what girls fit us and our comfort level. Be yourself and go to all 16 sororities and see where you click, look around during rush to see if your liking the girls who like the same sororities as you, that's your future pledge class. See if your yourself, your naturally liking all the girls you meet in a sorority house. You'll meet 5 to 6 to 10 girls by pref night. You should click with everyone you meet. Over 100 similar girls. Dont pick on status, pick on fit. Girls who dont, arent comfortable.

I'm in tri delt and I think from my rush experience...I personally liked theta, I'd and alpha phi and do NOT think one is more special than the other. I would have been happy in any of the 4 sororities. One of my best friends is in theta. We met in a class and clicked. One of my good friends from home is in A E Phi. My dorm had a mix of all the sororities and we all had fun together. I was myself during rush, no plan, and just went through the rush process. Similar to dating, you go with a click. This post sounds like a girl who wants to date a football player or lax player or phi delt based on status versus who you naturally like? I love being in my sorority because it's fun and I like my friends. I also like my other friends. Girls or guys who take a strategy versus fit??? I'm a believer in be yourself and go with natural click. If you go through rush and dont like the girls or think your hotter than them or too hot or cool for them, please give that bid to a girl who wants to be in that house and will enjoy it.

Hmmmm...I'm from New Jersey. 8 people from my high school go to u of m. We all love it! I had a lot of HOT people in my high school... 3 of the hot guys go to maryland and are in frats, 2 girls are in tri delt, 1 is in AXO and 1 is in Phi Sig and we are all friends. We aren't into tiers??? The 2 tri delts are very pretty and the phi sig is very pretty. I'm in AXO and love it! I love my friends. 7 people from our high school go to Penn State which is bigger with more bars and we visit each other often for football games. All of us are happy! I think the post made me sad for the girl who wrote it? I loved AXO going through rush. I love it now! My friends in tri delt are cool too. I get you wanting to know tiers... but all of us went through rush together and chose sororities we liked when we actually went through houses??? The 2 tri delts were drawn to tri delt and theta, the phi sig was drawn to phi sig, sdt and ae phi and I liked AXO and AOPi and we are still friends and like our sororities. None of us compare penn state to maryland...we all hang out. We liked maryland when we applied and they liked penn state. Our high school was set up.similar to maryland... the social people hung out together. The 3 guys were hot in high school and hot here and the girls were pretty in high school and pretty here. I think its "crazy" what the post said???!!! Sad. I'm just sad someone wrote that about u of m. I love it here and do not think this post is accurate or true?? Sad. My friends at penn state said the same. They were shocked!

I rushed as a sophomore. I liked my Freshman year BUT at a big school felt I wanted a "home"... freshman year I saw the tears for some during rush and the confidence for others. It's a mix. Over 1000 girls go through rush, and if you have your eyes already set on only a top sorority before rush even starts... your really competing for 150 to 200 spots against 800 other girls. I'm not sure what you meant by not hot or cool enough??? I didnt have a focus, I just went through rush and took it step by step. You know the reputations of the houses, true. But it's long days and you see 16 houses and then 12 and then 6 and then 2. Some girls get cut and dont have as many houses to see. Its competitive. The girls I was drawn to during rush were looking at the same sororities as me. You see the same girls as it narrows during rush. It's a process. I really liked being in a sorority and I'm glad I did it. I went abroad too. I got to see college from a few angles, independent, sorority and abroad. Its fun... you always have girls to hang with on the weekends and at night, someone to go out with, meals and snacks in the house. Bid Day is a big fun party!!! Football season is a blast with tailgating. The wknds are fun with parties, formals, girls night. Cliques do break out but as a whole it's a lot of girls to hang with. Make sure you pick a sorority by who you like talking too during a rush. Rush for me went smoothly. Not as many spots for a sophomore. I liked my pledge class. I saw a video of a girl who got cut for grades. She seemed sad. She failed a class etc. Grades are key...3.0 and better. Guys saying girls in certain houses are stupid is a dumb not real comment. You cant get into a sorority without grades or stay. Your on probation. It's a social club. If your failing classes or getting a D or a C average, it's too much extra responsibility. Some girls get "distracted" by all the fun of college or a sorority and fail out. I've seen 2 friends fail out. Is it competitive if your solely focused on getting a top tier bid - YES. 16 houses so plenty to choose from. But not everyone out of over 1000 girls gets a bid. As for your comment...not hot enough or cool enough? I think that is very insecure. My sorority has a lot of pretty girls. But a bunch of the sororities .... not based on tiers has pretty girls. My friends are pretty and fun. One of my friends is a very cute blonde, was a cheerleader in high school, very cute boyfriend in school and she finds my sorority..
Competitive.... so many cute girls. I dont??? I feel like I have so many great girls to hang out with when I'm not studying or in classes. My wknds are really fun! When I was abroad, I missed having all that comraderie. If you live in the house, so many girls to hang out with. The sororities and fraternities all hang out.

Being on the other side of rush, its exhausting. More exhausting on the other side. Certain girls going through rush, wanted by every house. It's pretty obvious - in rush.

Wow this post and the replies made me realize how different UMD Greek life is not being in one of the top 4 sororities…. cause literally it doesn’t matter.
You’re gonna find a great group of friends to go to socials and study and do service with in any of the sororities and in that respect no, UMD rush isn’t competitive. There is only a handful of circumstances where women are dropped from every chapter. So no UMD rush isn’t competitive because a successful rush is finding a home, not a competition to the top.

most of these comments seem like they’re from people who rushed over 5 years ago. recruitment is a much more welcoming and inclusive experience now. all chapters got rid of the legacy policy and don’t give a crap anymore what chapter your mom or sister was in unless your sister is currently/recently in the same chapter at UMD.
i’m a senior now so i rushed in 2019. im not the hottest or most popular girl by any means and i didn’t know anyone in the chapters when i was going through rush. the only house that dropped me throughout the entire process was aopi. i’m now in a top tier and have experienced recruitment from my chapter’s perspective 3 years in a row. having a friend in the chapter won’t help you unless you’re friends with dozens of girls in the chapter. if you dress decent and look put together, you’ll be fine for the appearance aspect. recruiters are much much more interested in what you have to say and what kind of person you are. be outgoing, confident, bubbly, cool and you will be on the list for all of these chapters.
