how competitive is sorority rush?

its somewhat of a mixed bag. with each top sorority you will find some super hot girls but also a lot of average girls. greek life at umd is pretty tame and definitely overall drastically less attractive than schools like FSU, USC, PSU, UofA, etc. if you're looking to get a bid to a top tier some are easier than others.

Alpha Phi is notorious for dirty rushing, so I would suggest trying to meet some girls and make connections prior to rush.

Kappa Delta is considered a top tier but honestly are an extremely average looking group of girls. most of them are not super cool or have tons of instagram followers, they seem to have a very granola rush process so if you're having good conversations with the girls you're probably a shoe in.

Delta Delta Delta is the top tier a lot of people like to argue isn't top tier, but honestly in my opinion hotter and cooler than its competitors. The girls in DDD are the type of girls who would make a top tier at a school where rush is competitive. If you wanna go tri delt you should probably be hot and have a good instagram following.

Kappa Alpha Theta is kind of a blend of the before mentioned three. Many girls get into Theta through prior friendships and relationships with their members so definitely try to network. These girls are pretty attractive but not the brightest or most interesting lol. As long as you're hot and dress decently you're probably fi

I'm not sure where you ended up...BUT with that attitude you may not be meant for a tri delt or theta sorority at maryland. I'm pretty turned off by your attitude?

The girls in tri delt when I was a member...
In high school they were cheerleaders, dance team, captain of sports teams, student government, social, fun...homecoming queens.

At Maryland we had girls from the lax team, student government, cheerleaders, dance teams in tri delt. Girls dated guys on baseball, football, lacrosse teams.

Sometimes a girl doesnt fit in...wants a popular sorority but cant handle 120 girls who are equals? They dont fit in. It's better to rush and choose a house you are comfortable in and can "play with"....

My best friend in theta looked like the model nikki taylor and was cool, nice, well traveled and fun! A lot of thetas to me were very pretty and fun and nice.

It's not just based on looks...its who you are! Personality, fun, athletic, you'll want a mix versus 120 clones.

My friends in tri delt were all pretty, popular and nice in high school, college and after.

Me...I wouldn't choose a girl with that attitude. First step is presentation which is surface but life. Then its who you are.

You seem to me like a girl who fits in ...a middle tier popularity. Not so much pressure.

A confident pretty smart girl wouldn't worry if she could get a bid. She would assume she would. She was and is always top tier. Top Tier means being proud of who you are, your school, your friends. Inner and Outer confidence.

To compare girls at maryland and say... doesnt look like a cool crowd? Can I get a bid? 30,000 students?

I'm in a top sorority at Maryland. I liked both tri delt and theta during rush. During rush the top 4 are tri delt, theta, alpha phi and kd. A O pi is a chill version of the top 4 and considered a top house. A O pi probably the easiest out of the 5 to get a bid because most girls choose the top 4 as first choice with maybe A O pi as 2nd or 3rd choice. It depends if you are on a houses A list. Some girls are on A list at all the top houses. Those girls tend to be HOT looking, very pretty, good personality, make up and outfit and hair. Tri Delt is more classic or classy versus theta. But both have the most hot pretty fun girls. Alpha Phi having a few hot or pretty with very cute to cute. I agree KD considered a top house but more cute granola girls versus fun. The top 3 are considered to be tri delt, theta, and kd with alpha phi just under. When girls are going through rush.

I would suggest you work it during rush. Its competitive to get a bid.

When your the rushers... a lot of arguing for the top A list. Not all the girls agree. You'll have to "wow" everyone you meet in the house you want and not have a girl in the house who knows you and doesnt like you. If 1 girl doesnt want you, you wont get a bid. Or be on the A list. Tri Delt and Theta usually get majority of their A list unless a girl puts theta or tri delt first. Those 2 compete the most for the same top girls.

I've been to a bunch of state schools and I think your perception of top houses is negative and off target. I'm wondering if you actually met a bunch of girls in those top houses?

I agree with the descriptions on the houses. I would say that anyone in tri delt, theta and alpha would be in a top house at any school. At least 85 to 90%. You will find in any house 10 to 15 to 20??? What happens is that someone from an A list chose a different house and then the 2nd tier/B list happens. Sometimes a tier C list ...1 or 2 happens. A computer match list. The problem with a C lister is, they dont fit into the house.

From my experience theta and tri delt compete with each other the most for the hot girls. Most competitive. But all the girls in the top 5 are happy. A O pi has cuter with some hot cool girls than AXO. I think A O pi gets some girls who put theta or tri delt first and it was maybe their 2nd choice. I could see a bunch of them in those houses. Alpha Phi is a strong happy fun house to be a part of. Strong sisterhood.

If you want a top tier bid, I would go for theta, tri delt, alpha phi, kd or a o pi. They mix together the most with each other and the same fraternities.

Its looks and personality based. How you look and click with who you meet in the sorority. To get a bid, you'll have to click with everyone you meet. Pref night, can go either way, you think your in with certain girls and they decide that night that they dont like you pref night. I would try and find 3 houses you like a lot so on bid day your happy. It's expensive and a time commitment.

I didn't know anyone when I went through rush. I didn't know any reputations. I just rushed cold and was happy with all 3 of my pref night choices of theta, tri delt and alpha phi. Those were my 3 favorite during rush, I would have been happy in any of those 3. I also liked a o pi a lot! I would have been happy also in that house.

When I was on other side of rush, I realized how competitive it can get. Why some girls get dropped when I didnt get why. Why a girl could get dropped, she didnt click with everyone she met enough to be on the top A list. You have to click with everyone you meet plus be talked up in the rush meetings. Or sometimes a girl doesnt like you from growing up and refuses for you to be in her house. That's the truth! Why it's good to like 5 houses.

The truth... I think tri delt, theta and alpha phi the most similar. Fun! KD a little different. A O Pi a mix of the top 3. Some girls prefer a chill A O pi house to theta or tri delt. I found tri delt, theta, alpha phi and a o pi mixes the most with each other. Friends in those houses.

The reality is, if your a girl going through rush, you have questions. So the "making fun of asking or saying this is stupid" is someone who is not rushing. It's a stressful process for girls and guys. People do get upset if they dont get a bid to the house they want. I gave real advice. Make a real effort, care about your outfit, your hair and make up, make sure to connect with the girls in each house, GPA of 3.0 is important for a top tier house. Nationals have gpa 3.0 requirement- 3.0 or better from high school/college for tri delt, theta, alpha phi and kd. You could get dropped on grades round 1. Round 1 tends to be grades with minor cuts. Pref night, be on! You'll have to be on your top choices A list to get a bid. You'll be happiest to like 4 houses. If you don't like 3 or 4 houses by pref night, just want 1 sorority house, I think you may end disappointed. When rushing, put in effort the whole process. It's a tiring process for the everyone. Its draining emotionally and physically. Once you get a bid, you spend a lot of time with the girls so make sure you find house you click with.

Great girls in all the houses. Happy girls are girls who find the right fit for them. You'll find a crowd of girls you will hang with. Once in a sorority - girls form crowds within the pledge classes of 3 to 4 to 6 to 8 girls. Some girls dont find their crowd and it's harder to be happy in the house. A lot of comments how girls dont realize how cliques are formed in the houses. That's real too. Everyone tries to be nice to everyone but cliques and best friends form in each pledge class. Same with some girls who prefer different fraternities or teams.

I agree with a lot of advice on here. My little sister is planning to rush next year...her friends have questions. She's lucky in that she is my little sister BUT I told her to wow them at her top 4 choices. Anything can happen at rush and she may choose to go a different sorority or choose mine. She will be friends with girls in her pledge class.

Agree, top houses you'll need at least 3.0 gpa. Step 1!!! 2.75 it narrows down, 2.5 narrows down more.

Step 2 - be in it to win it. Look as pretty or HOT as you can look for every round, try to connect in all conversations, want it!!!

3) If 1 girl doesn't like you, your out in a house. Sometimes that's a bummer because 1 girl can ruin you getting in. Why like 3 to 4 houses. When you rushee girls go home, we girls spend hours discussing who we like. Its longer for the girls hosting rush. Hours!!! The easiest picks are the top picks. Sometimes a less pretty girl will need someone to talk her up.

A best friend or sister in a sorority can get dicey. It's more sensitive for a sister. A best friend... one girl rushed as a sophomore and her best friend spent a year talking this girl up, bringing her to the house, not begged but begged and she wasnt a traditional "our house pick" BUT her bestie was relentless. We picked her. She was fine. Not a typical but we went with it.

Now another girl tried to do the same with her best friend and NO WAY. She was cut!!!

Another girl had many friends in the house and 1 girl secretly told the rush committee a story about this girl so she was cut. Was it right? This stuff happens and we loved who was cut. Girls get petty...if you were mean to a girl years ago, hit on her boyfriend, secret talks to the rush committee and a girl is cut no discussion. This has happened a few times since I was in the house.

This happened to a girl I loved, I called a good friend in each of the other top two houses and told my friends to pick this girl!

You'll have to sometimes have an advocate who talks you up in her own house or a competitor.

Why it's good 4 or 5 houses in each tier.

Sometimes you'll be cut from a good house and you wont understand why, dont let it knock your confidence. Focus on the houses that like you. Always work it!!!

I do think a bid from a top house, is competitive. You'll see how many girls go through rush and the tears on cut lists. Always look your best, engage in conversation, be fun.

Make sure its something you can afford to do and want to do. Because its sad when a girl rushes and quits a semester or a year in. She took a bid from a girl who wanted to do it for the full 4 years. Then sorority houses have to do small rushes of 5 girls to 8 girls to pay for the spots. Those small rushes are even more competitive, tears from the girls you personally brought in and the other girls said NO. The houses are expensive to maintain. The top houses are the biggest and most expensive dues. All things to keep in mind when rushing.

My freshman year roommate and best friend until rush.... I got a bid from tri delt. She did not. It was BAD/awkward. She re rushed sophomore year and went Theta. When I was on the other side, the girls didn't she was the right fit for tri delt. Why??? We were best friends all through high school. Rush can get BAD in the dorms if you don't get the sorority you think you want.
