describe the sororities!
by: YayCould anyone give me short descriptions of each sorority? Also have been reading about this international thing on here and how some sororities are/aren't? Could someone please explain this a bit, I'm so confused. Also, when available, if someone could please post which sororities are rushing this coming semester it'd be much appreciated. Can't wait :)

- Going to be honest here, this isn't the best place to find non-biased descriptions of the sororities on campus, the best way is to go on their websites (just google (sorority) carleton university)
- There are 3 NPC(national panhellenic conference) sororities (AOII, PhiSig, DPhiE) which people consider as the international sororities. (at UOttawa, there is also APhi and TriDelt)
- locals are the ones that are only at carleton/UOttawa/Algonquin
- Nationals are the ones that are found only across canada
- Alpha Pi Phi is an exception, they do have a very small chapter in the states but they are not panhel so it is debatable whether they are international or not
- you will likely know by the end of the week which sororities are doing a winter rush/recruitment

There's a massive difference between NPC sororities and all others, definitely rush one of each and ask them what the perks are. From my perspective the perks of NPC are endless, you have sisters all across the world, there's a certain prestige about wearing your letters, we take road trips to visit the huge sorority houses our sisters in the states live in, we have a huge amount of funding and very rich history. The perk of not being NPC is that you aren't as regulated meaning they don't have standards to live up to. But that's why NPC recruits girls who can live up to those standards.
NPC: Phi sigma sigma, Delta Phi epsilon, Alpha Omicron Pi (CU) Delta delta delta, Alpha Phi (uottawa)
Others: everyone else... Xi delta theta, tau sigma phi, nu sigma Pi, alpha Pi phi, zeta theta xi, omega phi sigma, omicron iota.. theta.. don't even know their names because they're pretty irrelevant on campus, most were formed by girls who were kicked out of NPCs lol (or couldn't get a bid to begin with)
Harsh but honest answer

some locals in ottawa are actually respectable, they were formed before internationals were really big, Xi Delta Theta, Nu Sigma Pi, Delta Psi Delta (questionable). The others were formed after they left an international organization because they didn't like the way things were being run, Tau Sigma Phi, and Alpha Pi Phi - the others were formed because they couldn't get a bid anywhere, Zeta Theta Xi, and Omega Phi Sigma. I don't know why anyone would want to join an organization that was founded by people who couldn't get into others but hey if it's where you feel at home go for it. The internationals are great if you're looking for tons of connections all over North America but if you enjoy a smaller feel than a local is for you. I really suggest trying out as many organizations as you can to know which one is best suited for you! other than ZOE and OPS i think they all have something to offer their members.

International sororities:
Alpha Omicron Pi - Super sweet, always putting in a ton of philanthropy hours. Half of them party, the other half don't.
Delta Phi Epsilon - Down to earth girls, they killed it at Deepher Dude last semester. Their newer girls party more than the older ones, but overall they seem pretty chill.
Phi Sigma Sigma - Hot and super smart girls. Love to party and throw down. Great reputation with the fraternities.
Locals:
Alpha Pi Phi - Used to be cute and friendly but are quickly losing that reputation. Very fake.
Delta Psi Delta - ...wouldn't recommend.
Tau Sigma Phi - Known for their partying, but the past couple of years they've actually done some philanthropy which is nice.
Xi Delta Theta - Gorgeous, super friendly. Not a huge presence at Carleton these days.

In the end I suggest going to at least one party for every org (unless you already know people in it and don't like them or something). Yeah benefits are important but the reason people STAY in their organization is the sisterhood, keep going back to the houses that you connect with the most!

This right here ^ I wouldn't be caught dead in any local/club/wannabe sorority. It's Panhel NPC or nothing.
