moms in sororities?

by:

I'm a transfer and plan on participating in fall recruitment but was wondering if having kids would get me cut. My boys will be living with my parents in OC but may visit sometimes on the weekends. I have always wanted to join a sorority and know I can make the time for my kids, school and Greek life.

Should I mention my kids during recruitment or would it be better to not say anything? I don't want to get cut just because I'm a mom. Are there any other mom's in the sororities?

honestly, i don't know of any moms or dads in the greek system here. that should NOT be a factor that gets you cut, but not gonna lie, it might be awkward and you houses may cut you because girls simply don't have much in common with a parent going to school. it's probably better not to hide it either because things will be so much worse if they find out later and have a problem with it.

in my opinion you should concentrate on school and your kids. being Greek is quite a commitment. i know you say you want to be in a sorority but.... sorry.... your priorities changed since you popped out a couple of kids. it's part of the responsibility of being a parent.

i agree with what the above person says. i just dont think you can find the time. i also agree that you might get cut because girls wont find that they have this in common with you and having kids is quite a lifestyle.

No one wants a mom joining their chapter. Maybe you could apply to be a house mother but seriously none of the girls will want a mom with kid in their PC. What are you going to bring your kid along to parties and mixers on the weekend?! If you wanted to be in a sorority your whole life maybe you should have thought twice before having a kid.

Wow, so rude... Sometimes life happens and unplanned things happen. You mean young parents are not allowed to have a full college experience? Lord help you if something similar was to ever happen to any one of you.
I think it will be no problem for me to balance school, sorority and my children. I defanitely won't bring it up during recruitment though. Sorry not sorry

You asked a question and we answered it from our ALREADY affiliated into Greek life opinions. We gave our opinions because we know the extreme amount of commitment a sorority takes. You freaked out when we answered honestly. Also you obviously aren't sure it will be "no problem for [you] to balance school, sorority and your kids" or you wouldn't have even asked this question in the first place.

@Umm I am absolutely sure it will be no problem to balance all three, it's you who apparently has a problem with it. Sorry boutcha.

I think it's in your best interest not to rush at all. I feel like you're miles more mature than them and will feel umcomfortable there.

shouldn't she decide that?

you definitely should mention it. Not mentioning it kinda implies you're a bit ashamed even if that's not true. If you tell the truth, you will know who wants you for who you are :) and you are amazing, so much respect for you srsly

If you are interested I would just rush. I'm sure not everybody will have the opinion of some of the above posters. Even though you will not have the same experience as an 18 year old you could still have a positive and meaningful involvement in Greek life. Try it out.

you absolutely need to mention your kids. we choose girls to be in our sororities because we have a lot in common with them/ lead a similar lifestyle. i think some girls who rush you might even feel betrayed if you join their sorority and then drop the huge news of having a kid.

At my last school I just said I had a long distance bf when family stuff came up. That worked fine. I really no longer feel that my kids are any of their business any more. Ignorance will be bliss for my sorority. :-)

It's sad that you're already planning your lie to cover up the fact that you have kids. I truly hope no sorority wants you.

Girl... Not bringing up the fact that a girl drinks a lot at a party is COMPLETELY different than claiming you don't have kids. You have two human lifes that really should be your first priority-- not worrying about whether or not you'll get into your favorite sorority. It makes me sad that you say "at my last school" and the lies you told there. It truly worries me for whatever sorority you join-- not because you have kids, but because you are completely delusional, rude and a chronic liar. I really don't see why you even asked this question in the first place if you seem so sure of yourself after 99% on here have advised you against rushing.

while i do agree that everyone should get a chance at the college experience you chose a different lifestyle for yourself when you had your kids. not saying there is anything wrong with that at all, im just saying that as im speaking from my affiliated, four years in a sorority perspective. i just dont believe that you would find much in common with these other girls. you brought up girls who lie during rush about things like money and popularity status, which are both very frivolous and dumb lies. it really doesnt impress people but if a girl lies about that during rush, so be it. lying about two lives who should be your first priority shows that you are shameful and is much of a bigger and more decietful lie than lying about how many friends you had in high school.

I can't see you having a positive experience in Greek life when your entire experience would be based on a lie of omission.

Not only are you a mother, you're also 22...you're four years older than most of your pledge class. Going back to the mom thing, do you realize that not mentioning it shows how shameful you are? Your kids make up who you are and leaving it out means you'll be acting like a different person the whole time. I feel sad for your kids. Their mom would rather join her favorite sorority than talk about her kids.

@op, I see what you mean. I would bring it up after recruitment at least though. It REALLY is a big part of who you are.

You sound like a total loser and I can't believe USC has lowered their admission standards that low. Better get your tubes tied you should not have any more kids.

with or without kids, a 22 year old is going to have a really hard time getting a bid. its just kind of weird. maybe be a house mom?

I'm not 22, I'm a bit younger than that. My nickname, 'Mommy22boys,' should be read as 'Mommy to two boys' but I was being lazy when I typed it in lol

Ok. They give bids to transfers who are 20 so if you are 20 you will have a fair shot. 21 is probably in the clear too.
