realistically how much do looks play in rush?
by: nervousHow important are looks in sorority recruitment? I know their are exceptions but generally are looks extremely important? Do most chapters cut based on appearance at least for the first couple of rounds? Genuinely curious

One night, a girl named Jessica was killed by a ghost. The ghost was named John and he was the ghost of a boy who was bullied at her school.
If you don't repost this on 4 different schools' greekrank discussions within the next 4 minutes, JOHN THE GHOST will get you tonight while you sleep.

I'm not going to lie, looks are important when you're only talking to someone for 5 minutes. With this in mind, if you have a kick ass personality and can sell yourself within those 5 minutes, then you could easily be unattractive and still get into any house. Hence why the unattractive girls in top houses are usually the only ones with substance

Let's be honest - many students at UCLA aren't particularly socially adept. There will be lots of girls going through recruitment with sub-par personalities, so while looks do play a role, personality plays a big one, too.
There are plenty of very cute girls who will be cut by the mid and top chapters because they're awkward. But there will definitely be average-looking girls with awesome personalities that make it into top houses. Look at any of the pledge class pictures, and you'll see what I mean. In general though, every chapter wants a pledge class full of beautiful AND fun AND involved AND high-GPA women.
Keep in mind that "looks" can also encompass your style and grooming, and there's a lot you can do there - make sure your hair is freshly cut and colored (if you color/highlight your hair), 'do' your hair every day of recruitment, do your makeup every day (tastefully, of course), get your brows done if you need, etc. Make sure your clothes fit and are the cutest version of whatever reflects your personality. Etc. Etc. There are so many things in this category that you can work on over the summer.
Good luck.

Looks are pretty important. They're not the only thing considered, but they are the main thing. Im not sure any sorority specifically ranks looks, but you will get ranked lower if you dont look like the kind of girl they want. Typically the higher you go in rankings, the more they care about looks.
That being said, personality is important too. Id say my looks are on par with an upper mid tier sorority, but im in a lower mid tier house because i have major social anxiety and im awkward because of it. It's not something to get upset over though; i feel much more comfortable in the house that im in than i would in others. Higher ranked houses also take a few girls that dont necessarily meet their expectations in looks if the girl seems like she would be fun and social since they want to remain in good standings with the frats. (If youre more quiet, I wouldn't recommend going for these houses).
Plus, do you really want to be in a house that's going to judge you so much on your looks? I know if my sisters told me i had to lose 5 lbs before i could wear my letters in public, id be pretty devastated.
