2023 UCLA Sorority Rush
by: RushGirl2009So many of us just got cut from the top 5 houses at UCLA after the first round--like a ton of us. The ones we have left most of us do not connect well with. I think UCLA needs more sororities. They only have 350-380 spots and over 980 PNMs this year. It is such a bummer b/c so many people are dropping now and really want to find a sisterhood with a group of women they have things in common with. It is also frustrating to have amazing conversations and get cut. I just don't get it. I wish the houses could take more people.

Agree. More sororities are needed. The cuts were brutal and very upsetting. I know a girl who is so amazing, kind, funny smart, a bit famous (influencer) and beautiful and she got cut from all the top ones and is dropping now. Who knows what is going on.
I feel like Panhellenic took the rush fees knowing they would make a bundle and people would be really unhappy after the first day with 900+ PNMs.

We don’t need more houses when even the top houses can’t fill the bedrooms. Theta has had that problem for 3 years now I think kappa and even Aphi do, and rush numbers drop every year. If you have your mind made up about what sorority you think you’re right for but didn’t get back then try COB.

pretty unsure where this is coming from, considering this is the highest PNM retention rate in YEARS. out of the 980 PNMs we started with, there were 930 going into the second round. (numbers confirmed by panhel). respectfully, if all you’re interested in are the top houses, you need to COB and not waste everyone else’s time. Sorry not sorry you didnt get the houses you want back but don’t act like everyone’s dropping bc of it.

I was in a top house at UCLA a few years back and had an amazing time so I will give you some brutal perspective. Most won't admit this, but the first round is very superficial for the top houses, unfortunately. As expected, it is based a lot on looks, weight, who you know, if you are "connected" or someone well known etc. I know it is rough. You will rarely see any girl who may be considered heavy or even slightly overweight in any of the top houses even when they are very pretty. The percentage is very low. This is the harsh truth. I always hated this because we cut some amazing girls who would have been so great to have but that is how it is. Keep in mind that the sororities have to make cuts after one person meets with you in the first round so there is not much to go on other than looks/connections etc. Don't take this as meaning you are not pretty. Sometimes girls will get a spot over you due to connections. The top houses are image conscience so they pick girls that they think will help maintain that. I know everyone looks at the rankings and a lot of people don't want the bottom sororities, but I have met some amazing girls in those when I was at UCLA and they had great experiences so just try to give it a chance. As you get older, the rankings become ridiculous. It really will be about the friendships in the end and if you can connect with enough of the girls to have a great few years. I have been in the workforce for 3 years now and no one cares that I was in a sorority. Honestly, a lot of times people look down on it so I don't mention it too much in my professional life. Just remember as hard as it is right now, in the big picture, just pick one where you can see yourself building great friendships and memories. With that said, if you don't connect with the girls at all, drop as it is a big time commitment and is costly to not be happy. The frat parties get old pretty quickly anyway! Good luck.

We need to market the lower sororities better. The ranking system is killing them! A lot of PNMs are really upset when all they have are the lower 5 and they don't want to give it a chance. I ran into 3 PNMs the other night who were in tears and dropping rush b/c all they got were 4 lower ones. Maybe the top 5 need to take more girls??

The mere complaining of being dropped after some meaningless 5 min conversation gets you cut deems you completely superficial and not understanding the benefits of finding lasting friendships in all houses. This isn’t Bama. Do you think you’d get into one of those top houses?
Have an open mind.

Here is my story. I rushed freshman year and got cut from the top houses after round 1. I was about 25 pounds heavier than I am now. I dropped rush and came back sophomore year, lost the weight and I am now in a top house. As awful as it is, weight is a big deal to most of the top houses. Most top houses will take girls with a better body and an ok face over girls with a pretty face who are bigger. That is fact. (I don't know if this is an issue with you or your friends) I know this is all superficial, but if you can get past all of it, once you are in the house you connect with, the girls inside can be great friends and you have amazing times. We all know how awful the rush process can be but this is sorority life almost everywhere.

I have been at UCLA for a year so I am very familiar with the houses and the types of girls in each. I do not fit well with the houses I have left. I wish I did, but I don't.
There is a need for more houses. It is stilly to have close to 600 girls get cut in the end. The community needs to get larger as there is demand.
