dropping sorority and re rushing?

by:

Hi, I'm a freshman new member in a sorority here at UCLA. During recruitment I fell in love with another house and they kept asking me back up until the very end, but when I opened my bid card I got the house I put as my second choice. It was one I didn't really feel a connection with throughout rush but they kept asking me back. I was pretty sad, but I decided to really try and give the house a shot. I've been to almost every meeting and event and I feel as if I've really given the house a chance, but I have not clicked with 95% of the girls. I don't feel at home, and hanging out with the girls in my current house feels more like an obligation rather than something I want to do. I know Greek Life is for me, but I do not feel "right" in my current house. Initiation is coming up and I was wondering if it is possible to drop and re-rush as a sophomore next year. Will I be "blacklisted" because I've stayed in my current house this long? Will other sororities even give me a chance or should I just not bother? Please don't reply if you're just going to be rude about my problem; I just don't think staying in my house is fair - to myself or to the house - when I know my heart is not in it.

If you aren't happy, then don't stay. Unless the situation is pretty bad and you make a total scene out of leaving, you won't get black listed for dropping. Sororities are a huge time and money commitment, and you deserve be comfortable in your house. I say re-rush as a sophomore. Everyone I know that rushed as a sophomore says they felt much more confident throughout the process!

Just be aware that certain houses have a national drop once drop always policy. Meaning if they cut you at any point in the process during a previous rush, you will be cut again. It’s to be fair to other girls who are first time rushees (doesn’t matter year in school, a sophomore can still be a first time rushee) this is a national policy that they always follow no exceptions.

So if you’re taking the risk that the house you wanted is one of those with that policy (and there’s about half I would say with that policy) then don’t complain later if they cut you right away.

Also you say you clicked with that other house but they didn’t give you a bid (and if you made it to pref round and you didn’t get your number 1 choice that’s telling) they didn’t think you fit in then.

Remember the top houses have a way of making every girl FEEL like you belong (they’re great at recruiting that’s why they’re top) but in actuality they’re only going to ultimately offer BIDS to the ones they truly wanted. They do this to maximize their numbers so every girl potentially picks them every round that way in the last round they can have their best choices

I have a lot of questions here. What are you hoping to accomplish by going thru rush again? A lot of girls rush again hoping to get a bid from a higher tiered house which basically never happens. In all likelihood, you won't get a bid from a house that dropped you right after pref. either. So you could end up in a much worse situation than you already are. Formal Rush is a very stressful process. Was there another house that you felt more comfortable in where know more of the ladies? Try to get to know more people in Greek and perhaps you'll have a different experience going through a second time?

Don't even try. You won't get into a top house. You have no chance compared to the freshmen and the sophomores who haven't rushed before. It's over for u, maybe you aren't meant for Greek life
