been crying all day

by: Che

I thought rush was going great. Yesterday at pref round I went to my two favorite houses A phi and Pi Phi. I thought it went well. I ranked them signed my MRBA card and waited. This morning I got a phone call from my rho gamma telling me not to show up to bid day because I had not been offered a bid from either of my two pref round houses
My heart dropped I’ve been crying all day !!! What makes it worse my two roommates got houses.
I don’t know what happened /: I’m srill in shock I can’t believe it I’m so sad !!!
Should I have kept a lower ranked house so I could use it as a back up ? Idk I’m distraught :(
Any words of encouragement ??

I'm so so sorry. I dropped out of recruitment at my school because the only sorority that invited me to pref round was the only sorority out of seven houses that I didn't want. I was devastated and cried a lot too. I hope you'll be able to try again in the spring!

Can I just say I’m so happy for the responses of support in this post
Most comments on Greek rank are such petty and even vile responses
This level of support on this thread tho shows there are good people and thank you for the encouragement and also for sharing your own stories

I'm super confused...I thought if you ranked both you are guaranteed to get one, even if you were dead last on both bid lists?

Yeah I’m pretty sure you’re guaranteed a bid if you have two houses on pref and you don’t suicide rush, or you did something completely awful and broke a Panhel rule that dropped you from rush at the last minute

Unless you suicide bid or showed up drunk or something and were dropped for bad behavior, you’re guaranteed a bid. I have never heard of this happening to anyone at any school. Kind of starting to think this is a piphi self rank trying to put themselves on aphi’s level “two of my favorite houses aphi and piphi”....

every year there are a few girls who dont get called back to either of the houses they preffed. This is why rho gammas will explain to pnms if they dont get a call a few hours prior to bid day, prepare to attend bidday. though the numbers of girls that get these calls are small each year, there are always a few that do not get houses. it is not unheard of or "impossible"

You are not guaranteed a bid. Although it is rare to be dropped by both houses at that stage it does happen every year.

No, there does not have to be a so-called "scandalous" reason. It's more complex than that.

It’s called cross cutting. It does happen.
Ucla does not guarantee bids if you make it to pref round.

It’s a bit complicated but
Basically what happens is that the pnm ranked let’s say A phi as their number 1 and pi phi as number 2. So the system will try to match her to her first choice at this point.

Now the houses have two lists. List A and list B (nobody is cut at this round you’re either in their list A which or List B)

So PNM was not on a phi’s A list. Therefore a match isn’t made. However a phi won’t get everyone from their A list presumably some girls will go to another house so the system will hold this PNM to the side to see if there’s space depending on quota for her to move from the b List up to the a list. This will depend on gms your girls from a phi’s a list matched somewhere else. And what rank the PNM is on the B list if she’s high up she has a chance to mow to the A list when girls from a Phis a list match somewhere else.

However this doesn’t seem to be the case. A Phi then filled their quota but PNM didn’t make the jump from b list to a. So at this point NOW the system will try to match her to her second choice since it couldn’t make a match with the first choice. However by this point even if pnm was on pi phi’s a list she was skipped over because pnm ranked them 2 and the system hadn’t her set aside in case she could make it into a phi’s a list as mentioned before. This is where it gets risky, while she’s waiting to match to her #1 house the other house is filling their quota with girls who did select them as #1 including girls who move up from the b list. Depending how fast this house fills up (tends to fill up faster for the “better” houses). By the time it was clear a phi reached quota and PNM didn’t make it off the b list they then try to match her with her second choice but by this time it would seem pi phi had also met their quota with girls who ranked them as 1 from their a and b list. Therefore you run into the “cross cutting” scenario which is rare and very circumstantial but it does happen.

Very confusing I know but I think people should know and maybe they won’t feel so crummy. It’s a numbers game it’s a weird algorithm and sometimes bad luck strikes.

@ok - but as I understood it those calls are for the girls that only list one sorority ("suicide"). Not for girls that list both sororities.

@Real Greek - but sororities don't drop girls after pref. They rank them all. I know my sorority cannot cut a girl at pref. We can only rank them dead last on the list. At almost all schools that's why if you list both houses you are guaranteed a bid. And if you're dead last on both lists and they fill up quota before they get to you, that doesn't matter...you get placed as a quota addition.

Obviously I'm not a Pi Phi or Alpha Phi, I just know with my sorority we cut girls before pref because we cannot "cut" a girl after pref. And I understood it as the only way you don't get one of the two is if you choose to not list one of the sororities after pref on purpose.

READ the post above you about cross cutting.

And yes quota additions are a thing BUT you’re only allowed to have quota additions if your chapter total member number is under what Panhellenic sets. Total chapter number not pledge class number.

As far as I know neither of those houses were allowed quota additions this year. So I don’t think she broke any rules it was just extremely unlucky for her
