fall rush 1989
by: ucla alumna
I know you all probably don't care too much, but it is super interesting to see how much (and little) these rankings have changed at UCLA. I can't help but wonder how a house could decline so badly or rise to such heights. That's got to take A LOT of years of constant strong movement in one direction. It's weird to have my daughter going there now and having a completely different take on greek rankings.
So, for fun, FYI, in fall of 1989 here was the legit ranking:
sororitys:
DG
Kappa
Theta
Tri Delt
P Phi
Ad Pi
ChiO
Alpha Phi
KD
AE Phi
AXO
Gamma Phi
Sigma Kappa
Delta Zeta
I am literally shocked that Tri-Delt declined so much. How did that happen? Also, Alpha Phi was a low mid. How did they become so good? AD Pi used to be just on the bubble of a top tier house. Gamma Phi Beta was really low and, just, ugh, no.
The Frats were:
Lambda
Sigma Chi
SAE (although they didn't do much socially, just had all the athletes)
Sigma Nu
Phi Psi
ZBT
Theta Xi
Beta
Sig Ep
Theta Chi
Sammy
ATO
Pi Kapp
Sigma Pi
gets kinda lost from there...
Does anyone have a history on the changes and how long it took for these houses to change so much??

Greek Rank has only been only been around for about 6 years. As a 20 something, my memory already doesn't serve me well & I'm having trouble remembering what I had for lunch yesterday. Tri Delt may not have been the sorority that YOU thought it was (in rank) because we all have our own opinions based on our own experience.
The Greek system was huge back then & there's no possible way that you could have been that specific in where each house was at, especially without the "benefit" of an Internet. You can't possibly know what the general consensus was on EVERY HOUSE. Possibly the top 2 & bottom 2 MAYBE but again, this has a lot to do with YOUR personal experience.
Making snide comments about certain houses makes me believe this is suspect but then this IS an anonymous site & to me EVERYONE is suspect here. Sort of seems like a mom of a new DG wanting to pump her house up a bit. And/or a DG/alum.
All this ^^^ or you're a Lambda. Can't decide.

Just cruised onto this site for the first time and wanted to drop a few comments on this thread. Here is how I recall the rankings when I attended in 1984-1988.
The order of the tiers was always debatable, with fin differences
Fraternities:
Top: Very cool houses to be in with cool reps, each had a great theme party and had activities with the top sororities and best IFC Teams
Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Nu, ZBT, Lambda Chi, Sigma Chi, SAE, Beta
Middle: Theta Xi (Tropical Madness party raged), Phi Kappa Sigma (annual Hawaiian party was a must attend), Alpha Tau Omega (old Heidelberg Oktoberfest party was a smash), Theta Chi, Sig Ep (had a great charter launch and started out mid-tier but struggled for first few years), Delta Sigma Phi (mostly due to awesome Sailor's Ball every year)
Bottom: Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma (defunct),Sigma Pi, TKE (was in the Pi Kappa Phi house), Sammy, Zeta Psi (demolished), Theta Delta Chi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Sigma Phi (defunct)
Overall Reps of top houses:
Phi Psi: cool tall guys, great in athletics, Captain Morgan's Rage was one of the best parties of the year. Fav with Theta and Kappa
SAE: Hardcore athletes, Paddy Murphy awesome party
Beta: Hardcore athletes, huge guys you did not want to fight. Tequila Sunrise Party awesome`!
Sigma Chi: Great at athletics, Derby Days super popular with the sororities
Lambda Chi: Really hip, trendy guys good at sports, Playboy party was also top.
ZBT: Usually struggled to stay top tier, but wildly popular with good sororities and Guys and Dolls annual party was a smash.
Sigma Nu: Tended to give a very elitist vibe and clanish but a top house
Sororities:
Top: Kappa, Theta (by far)
then Dee Gee, Tri Delt, Pi Phi
Middle: Alpha Phi, ADPi, XO, AXO
Bottom: Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, AEPhi
Sorry if I overlooked anyone. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! Party on.

Seriously Lambda, you must be on this site 24/7. You are NOT a top house.
