I don't think it can "ruin" your chances with better houses, bc they won't really know you are being reached out to by them unless you tell them or are commenting on an active members post. The same thing happened to me, I even met up w a girl over the summer to talk before rush and was terrified. I don't think it's a bad thing to talk to them even though it's discouraged. I wouldn't advise meeting up in person though. Just keep your conversations centered around general Panhellenic/basic recruitment or ttu questions. Nothing too personal about them or their specific sorority. and definitely don't let the conversation steer into partying or any topic like that
