sorority grades
by: pnm?i’m going to be a junior in the fall and i regret not thinking about rushing until now. i know sororities cut based on grades, but is there anyway they couldn’t? like say i haven’t done the best but i’m brining my grades back up? i had a 4.0 this semester , but my GPA is at a flat 3. is there anyway i could still get into at least a “mid tier” sorority?

I’m not Panhellenic, but you really put yourself in a tough spot since you’re already a Junior and barely have a 3.0 GPA.
New members often have 3.4+ GPA and the ones that can get away with a 3.0 are actives, but even for them it’s going to be a red flag. Why rush so late? I know some people rush late and focused on getting their GPAs as high as possible and do extracurricular activities.
What makes you positively stand out when you rush this Fall?
There are also service sororities and other types of sororities that are less selective (or not at all) that you should look into. They offer great sisterhood as well.

You put yourself in a very tough situation since rush is competitive. Unless you know someone on the exec board of a house your going to have trouble getting into a “mid tier” since they often just cut the first day based solely on grades. And 3.0 plus being a junior is a tough sell.

I don’t think your chances are gonna get any higher if you decide not to rush this fall and do spring instead. A friend of mine rushed this Spring as a 2nd Semester Sophomore. She had a 3.5 GPA, she’s a TTU Ambassador, and she’s the VP 2 student organizations. I didn’t tell her this but she almost didn’t get a bid because the execs felt like she rushed pretty “late” ... I felt like this was a poor excuse since there’s plenty of girls rushing during their Sophomore years too so I vouched really hard for her. We’re considered to be one of the “Top-tier” sororities that’s why I also understand why the execs were very strict about who we invite. Spring Rush is usually held informally so you’re on your own or someone should vouch for you on your character and if you embody what the sorority stands for. Do you have any friends from the mid-tier sororities that you’re interested in? Start talking to them about it and tell them that you’re interested in rushing.

I formal rushed going into my junior year and got a bid. On pref I had a top tier and mid tier house. I ended up pledging mid because it just felt right and luckily I got that house on bid day. I had good grades at the time, but nothing perfect. At the end of the day as long as you look put together, have good communication skills, and show the best parts of your personality, you could get a bid in any house. It’s a lot different when you’re older but most of the girls rushing you are the same age as you so talking to them is easier. Do be aware that your pledge class will mainly be 18 year old freshman and there will be a huge maturity gap. It might be hard to fit in with your pc so be open to making friends with girls outside of it that are your age. You’ll have more fun that way.

Just go through rush. If they like you great, if not then it’s their loss. Don’t force yourself to be in an organization only to hate being a part of it once you’re in. At the end of the day, what sororities and frats have in common is we want our brothers and sisters to be great Alums one day that’s why we don’t just give out bids to anyone despite us being seen as a community that always party. We like to have fun, but in closed doors we’re kind of strict with our respective house rules.
