upperclassmen rushing sororities at tech: good or

by: JuWo

I am currently attending a junior college, and will be transferring to TTU this coming fall. I went to a JuCo straight out of high school because of a scholarship offer. (Major blessing, haven't paid a dime for college yet.) I will be classified as a junior when I come to tech, and I am super interested in Greek life. That being said, I've heard lots of rumors about how being an upperclassman limits your chances of sororities wanting to recruit you. I understand it's typically freshman/18 year old girls that are involved in formal rush week, but by then I will have just turned 21. I've got TONS of leadership and community service under my belt, and my current GPA is a 3.4. I'm genuinely interested in making friends/sisters with girls who are outgoing and driven like I am.

So, overall, does age or classification hurt your chances of being recruited? HONESTLY.

unfortunately, yes. rushing as a junior, and being a transfer student (I'm assuming this means you don't know girls in sororities here.), you will be cut from most houses in the first day or two in all honesty. there are a couple reasons for this, they know you probably won't fit in with your pledge class very well because of the age difference, and you probably won't be able to really develop as a member and contribute much to the chapter in only two years. that being said, you should still definitely try to rush if you are in it for genuine reasons (wanting the friendships and oppourtunities not t-shirts and being in a good house) because you probably will be cut from top houses so you should come prepared to be an AdPi, AxiD, etc... in years past AdPi and AXiD have had a "no cut policy" so you might find some luck there. best of luck and keep up your GPA.

As stated above, it is hard to connect with people in your pledge class when you're older. I say go for it. During recruitment, I met many girls who were older and seemed to have a fine rush, it may just be more stressful being older, but in the end it is all worth it. Good luck

I went through the same thing, I transferred as a junior. I went through spring rush though so my experience may have been a little different, but I can still offer a little bit of advice that I really hope you'll hear. You may get cut from top houses, just know that that's completely ok because it sounds like you're really in it for the right reasons, and even "bottom houses" have the things you're looking for. Don't be afraid of "bottom houses", even bottom houses at tech are better than top houses at some other schools. Go through recruitment with an open mind. Good luck!
