rush system
by: JaI was wondering why SCU doesn't have a rush like other schools do where instead of having to pref a house you are offered a bid after an invite only event? In that system you have choices especially if one of your choices doesn't want you. With SCU's system a lot of guys are screwed because you can basically only pref one frat and if they deny you that's it.

Honestly SCU fraternities should change their whole pref system. Obviously it would work better for rushees, but I think it would work better for fraternities as well. There seems to be a big divide between top, middle, and bottom tiers here, as most of the guys in mid-tier fraternities didn't think they could get into a top one and the bottom tier fraternities don't really get many prefs. There are a lot of cool guys who get turned away from top tier houses who would be great members of a mid-tier one, and same goes for middle to lower tier houses. Rush is supposed to be about finding the best fraternity for you, and the current system kinda goes against this.

All of my friends that rushed mid tier this rush period all said they weren't going to risk rushing the top house/ didn't think they could get in. And it does increase the gap between houses. The top houses literally have no competition because the guys they reject can't go on to get a bid from the mid tier houses. Why do you think a frat like Pike has been top tier so long? The mid tier frats get people who thought they weren't good enough for a top house.

Also, unless you only choose to rush one house (which only makes sense for sophomores and people with siblings in fraternities), it's really hard to just choose one house to pref. Rush is only four days. A lot of them seem pretty similar from the outside and that's the perspective you're getting as a rushee.
