is sigma nu really that bad?

There's a few guys I know in Sigma Nu and they're really genuine and laid back. They dispel a lot of negative stereotypes that people have of fraternities. I'm a senior now, and back when I was a freshman, they tended to be a bit more irrelevant, but in recent years and especially now they are rising and have more brothers than a few of the more "respected" fraternities actually (like 35-45?) They've been having some pretty good parties and actually having some social presence on campus in the past year or so which seemed unheard of back when I was a freshman. So I wouldn't count them out. They are some chill folks, at least the ones I know. By no means would I say it's better to be a GDI--don't take it too seriously and just rush the fraternities you click with best and avoid thinking too hard about it.

I'd say Sigma Nu over PSK (rape frat) or some other bottom tier frats if that helps you any?

You're looking to join Sigma Nu for all the wrong reasons-- I'm sure that they'll be thrilled to hear how you're rushing them only because you think they'll give you a bid. Of course, I might be wrong, and in that case, Sigma Nu isn't really that bad; from what I've heard, their chapter collapsed a few years ago, but now they are getting back on their feet. The ones I've met seem nice/genuine. I think they just have a bad rep from when they used to be very small + houseless.
