advice from a former vp
by: itallworksout
As a former vp recruitment, here is some advice that I wish I knew as a freshman rushing.
1. Notice when you talk to seniors - let’s be real: sororities cost money. Note how many seniors you spoke to in each chapter, because that actually counts a lot towards the sisterhood of a chapter. If seniors care enough about the chapter/what they got out of their sorority, they will stay until senior year. Don’t be afraid to ask ur friends too if they spoke to seniors! Chances are that in some chapters, no one you know spoke to a senior.
2. Follow your gut - chances are, you became friends with your first semester friends due to proximity, convenience, or classes. That doesn’t mean they are identical to you and you’d fit in the same sorority! Sorority sisters speak to pnms and think “which sister do I think this pnm would be friends with? Who would be her big?” The sororities that invite you back probably see you fitting in well in their chapter!
3. Trust the process - I know it’s easier said than done! I ranked sorority A as #1 and sorority B as #2 for my choices after pref, but I got a bid from sorority B. I was a little bummed out, but I ended up loving sorority B much more than I ever would have liked sorority A because sorority B knew which sisters I’d be friends with. Trust the process.
I promise it all works out, I promise bid day will be worth it!
