Help me understand Greek life
by: Yorkshire01Hello- not from US but coming to GW in the fall. My friends are no help in understanding sororities and I’ve just seen movies. Thinking of rushing in Spring. I like to have a good time but academics are really important to me and I’m thinking of going pre-med. why is it that theta and sigma delta tau are lowest in rankings? Are they not nice girls? What qualifies top rankings? Is it nicer girls or more popular?

Alum here - Definitely go through recruitment and the pre-recruitment events, talk to the chapters about how academics are important to you and see how they respond. You’ll find a chapter that shares those values. Each chapter has certain academic standards they uphold so I recommend looking into which chapters have been recognized in past years with academic awards and what their minimum GPA is. Some chapters will drop you the first night if your GPA is lower than a 2.9 (or so), so that weeds out a lot. If you get dropped by a chapter the first night it’s probably GPA related.
The rankings on this website don’t align with real life - so don’t worry. Take it day by day and try not to go in with any preconceived notions. It’s not like the movies lol. No matter how stressful recruitment might be leading up to and during, you will always end up in the right chapter. No need to stress if you’re yourself! If you fake your way through recruitment you’re going to end up in a chapter for the next 4 years that doesn’t align with who you really are.

Dear Yorkie -
The above is very good advice, to which I’ll add two more bits:
1. I seem to remember there was a reality show in the UK that was, in theory, based on North American sororities. It was a terrible stereotype. If you ever watched it, try to erase it from your memory bank. Not a GW-type sorority at all!
2. Be yourself and have fun - and you’ll find your people!

Thank you! This seems like great advice. It’s hard to tell the differences of each sorority as the girls are all so beautiful and seem like nice people. I look forward to going through recruitment.
