sorority recruitment
by: CO2017I am an entering freshman and I want to rush, but I don't know if I have enough money to pay the dues. I plan on working during the school year, so I will make money. Is it worth it to delay rush until sophomore year when I have the funds? Can I still have a fun time and go to parties if I am not Greek?

You can definitely still have fun without going greek. But it's probably better to join as a freshman and then go on early alumni status as a senior. That way it will be your LAST year that you aren't paying for as opposed to your first year when sororities are most relevant and fun. Rush and see if you like it (and also work to pay for it!) and if the money really becomes a struggle you can quit or go on early alumni status when you are a junior or senior.

Thanks for all the information! The main thing I'm worried about though is that if I pay for the dues I won't have enough money to pay for tuition second semester. I am still a few thousand short, so I'd rather earn the money first this semester and maybe next to make sure I have enough money for tuition, and then consider extras like Greek Life.

I was on the executive board of my sorority at GW and had to deal with financial issues with members. Honestly, if you cannot afford the sorority dues, or need a bit of help paying for them, speak with the president or head of finance and they should be able to provide you with a scholarship! Anyone that couldn't pay for their full dues because of monetary constraints we helped out, so that shouldn't bar you from rushing!!
